  • Which dog shoe/boot would you recommend…?

Does anyone have any of these dog boots? I seem to keep going back & fourth between them & can't really decide which to go with…

    • Ruffwear – Summit Trex™ Dog Shoes $29.99 (Pair of 2)
    • Ruffwear – Grip Trex™ Dog Boots $49.99 (Pair of 2)
    • Bark Brite – All Terrain All Weather Neoprene Dog Shoe $44.99 (Pair of 4)

I mainly take my dogs on walks on the road & may walk through a park. Sparringly there may be opportunities where we are walking an actual trail in the woods. One of my dogs loves to pull & I noticed that her paw's get shredded after a walk, more than likley because of that pulling. They currently don't have any dog boots/shoes & I would like to get one that can be used spring, summer & fall.

  • Y-shaped harness recommendations for a dog that responds best to martingale

I’m looking for harness recommendations for my almost fully grown pup. I get a little confused when looking at different harnesses, I’m not entirely confident on what’s considered Y or H. As silly as it may sound.

She is able to pull out of her medium Funfox harness. I got her a small and medium PetSafe harness and neither fit (too small on her neck then too large on her waist).

She best responds to leash pressure on a martingale. I’m starting to do more in public training though, and she really pulled on her collar today. She was able to settle eventually and do our exercises but I don’t want her to do any damage before we get to that point in our session. I also eventually just want to switch to a harness as we’ll be going on hikes and I’m interested in canicross.

I’ll measure her before buying anything, but I’d really appreciate specific brands and styles – especially if your pup is also high alert and takes a while to settle into new environments, and if they know how to back out of a harness.

ETA: I’m always watching her when she’s in a harness since she can back out. I sometimes have her on a long lead line, so I just worry about her backing out before I can get to her. I’ve used the martingale for this reason but would like a harness I’m confident in.

  • Dog can’t resist rugs and doormats

My small 8 y/o dog has always had a proclivity for urinating on doormats and rugs. She’s done this since she we got her as a puppy. She’s mostly potty-trained; this issue being the only reason I won’t say she’s fully trained. At this point it’s fairly infrequent but tends to happen when things get exciting like we have guests over or she’s left alone for over 4 hours (we never leave her more than 5).

We are about to move into a new home with hardwood floors and plan on putting rugs down for her, but I am worried she’s going to treat them as her personal pee pads. (Our current place has LVP.)

I am planning on slowly introducing her to the home, space and rugs. (Introduction > outside for potty, meets the rugs > outside for potty, etc.) Obviously this will take some time, but I can’t think of any other way. Open to any in all ideas.

  • I’m terrified of walks

I live in a very busy area and have 2 1.5 year old chihuahua mixes. One is a puller and one is a puller and an escape artist. The escape artist is anxious and struggles to tolerate bulky harnesses, so we use a step in harness that is comfortable for him. We’ve been making progress with pulling. We recently had an incident where my anxious dog got overwhelmed and almost backed out of his harness. I then coincidently saw a few posts about leashes breaking and dogs escaping. I’ve now developed a huge fear of my dogs escaping on our walks and running off. We’ve had a few instances where they ran out my door and down the street a bit, but have always come back. We’re working on our recall and I plan to get a 3 step harness, but I still worry about the leash breaking. I’m thinking of getting a two point leash so they’ll always be connected to me. But I just can’t stop with the what ifs. What if they are too overwhelmed to listen. What if there is a car nearby. Anyone else struggle with this?

  • Have I created a monster? [Help needed]

My wife and I adopted our dog 4 and a half years ago. He's an American Stafford shire who will turn 8 years old this April. He's always been a bit of a picky eater and we made the mistake of catering to it for a long time, which has now evolved to a very problematic behavior.

When we first got him, he was slightly underweight, and wasn't a huge fan of kibble. We were told by the vet that he needed to gain some weight preferably, so we started thinking of fun meals to give him. Kibble with plain boiled chicken breast, kibble with some (dog specific) salmon oil, kibble with dried meat sticks from the pet store, and so on. He's always eaten it fine, but after introducing something new to him, he'll enjoy it for a bit and then get bored at one point where he will outright refuse to eat it again.

We've now essentially run out of all options that are within our price range. We've bought over 8 different kibble brands and flavors, but he just refuses it all outright. He was on pain meds for a while for pains, which he now no longer takes since he no longer exhibits any signs of pain.

Starting this week, he's outright refusing food. Since he needed his meds, my wife decided to hand feed him his dinner, and he was a big fan. This is obviously bad since we can't constantly get him to slobber all his food out of our hand (time consuming and kinda gross lmao). This will probably also get boring eventually anyway and then we're truly screwed. I'd love some advice from people who have gone through this and managed to revert the behavior we taught him (we know it's more than likely our own fault).

He still accepts and joyfully eats a meatstick here and there as a treat, so I don't think he has tooth pain, and he gets the zoomies regularly still so I don't think he's in any pain. We've gone through the classics of pumpkin related products, wet foods, toppers, tried slowfeeders, all of which he no longer accepts as "good enough".

We'd love some help, thank you in advance.

  • Socialising with a cat

So my dog is quite clever and well behaved mostly. She understands what we want of her and follows. We’ve done may meet ups with our new cat where she’s just wearing a collar and we sit near her and she looks away on command for a treat. It’s been going really well to the point when we let her out she’s completely ignoring the cat.

However we were still a little worried as she’s a small dog (cockapoo) and has a strong prey drive for little things so we bought a basket muzzle for her for more hands off introductions.

This started very well she was ignoring the cat and mostly focused on trying to eat without the muzzle.

Unfortunately my cat is a bit of a menace and isn’t scared of anything. She won’t run away at loud sounds or anything so when we started letting them greet properly she was very excited to start playing. However all this has done is create interest in the cat again. We can’t get the cat to leave her alone she will chase my dog round the house and bat at her face, tail and paws. Not in an aggressive way but in a playful way. This has made my dog much more focused on the cat however and will now stare at her to ensure she doesn’t get attacked. I worry if we try and level up to no muzzle she will play with the cat too roughly or get mad at the cat for being to rough with her claws as she’s still learning not to use them and end up getting bit.

    Any tips ??
