  • Megathread: Pet Insurance

Which pet insurance is best for you? Are there any that may cover your dog's current treatment? Did your dog get injured during the waiting period and want to know if you're covered?

    Here's the place to ask.

Do know we cannot help you here with medical concerns, and lying or not disclosing things to the insurance company is illegal so we don't allow that either.

  • Help with difficult transition

Long story short there’s a high probability of my girlfriend of 6 years and I breaking up. We both haven’t fully decided yet but we have a close to 2 year old German shepherd that we’ve both raised together and he’s the both of ours son( even tho it’s my dog she’s his mom).

He can sense something’s wrong and his anxiety is going up. I’ve been gathering my things together and he’s been freaking out. If we do break up I’ll have to move out and move back into either one of my parents till I get back stable.

I’ve just been wondering what I can do to try and help him through this really though time. Ik if it does happen he’s not going to take living in a new house very well if his mom isn’t also there. He views the 3 of us as a pack and is fine if the both of us are visiting a new house he’s never been to bc he trust us but if either of us are away he gets anxiety that the hole pack isn’t with him.

  • Barking dog, tips and tricks

    Hi everyone!

I'm at my wits end with our 11 month old cocker spaniel. Our issue now, is his constant barking when he wakes up alone. We've been working tirelessly from the week after we got him at 9 weeks old and again from when when moved last autumn when he was 4 months old In the beginning he would bark the second we went out of the door. So we started "Door is the bore" without any real effect until we added "good bye" to it. The we increased the distance and time we were away from him. 1.5-2 months into this he could be alone for 4-5 hours without any issues, we sayd goodbye and left a sweater on the couch for him. we increased the days in a row he'd be left alone for 4-5 hours until he could do a week without issues. and then he'd be fine from when my husband left at 8 am until I got home at 2.30- 3 pm.

Now after days off after Easter he has been barking nonstop from around 11 am until I come back. Looking at cameras we have he doesn't seem scared or anything. It just looks like he wakes up, realises he is alone and begins barking his head off .

Every dog trainer we've been in contact with says that we can't reward his behaviour and must let him bark and o ly come back in when he stops. But my issue is that he will not stop, and our neighbours are complaining.

The only real change to his life is that I am very early pregnant, like a few weeks along and the fact we were home for 1.5 week because of Easter.

Do you guys have any tips how to salvage this or what to do? I'm just so upset, I don't have any time left to slowly do this whole 7-9 month process with him all over again

    please help

  • Looking for ball recommendations for my little, old man

    Hi everyone!

I have a very spunky and active 15.5-year-old dachshund. He is mostly deaf and blind, but ball is still life lol, and fetch is still his favorite game. We've noticed that he's having more trouble tracking the ball, so I am wondering if anyone knows of a smaller-sized, light-up ball that is BRIGHT? I've seen some that glow-in-the-dark, some that blink with colored lights, and some that seem bright but are designed to zig-zag. I need a ball that goes straight but has a bright light. His favorite are those see-through, spiky balls. Petco has a larger one that flashes multi-colored, but I can't seem to find something with white light because the colorful lights aren't super attention-grabbing.

I've also searched for accessible balls for blind dogs, but have only found balls that make noise, which wouldn't work because of his hearing loss. So, if anyone knows of a light-up ball with a bright light, or even has a suggestion of a safe way I could make one, please let me know! I'm pretty crafty, so I am not opposed to cutting a ball in half to put some sort of light-up mechanism inside.

    Thanks for any tips!

  • Senior dog who hates being brushed. what’s worked for you?

I’m looking for ideas from anyone with a senior dog (or any dog really) who hates being brushed. My little guy Toby is 14, almost 15, a 6 lb Papillon, and brushing with a traditional brush is basically a no-go. He’s very opinionated at this point 😅.

So far, we manage by keeping him trimmed up. I took a level 1 grooming class years ago, so I’m comfortable doing a bit of trimming myself. He does okay with that. We also get him professionally groomed a couple times a year, but I can’t afford every 6 weeks; realistically, I can do every 4 months.

I’d love to try some less scary, at-home options to help prevent mats and tangles between grooms.

    Has anyone tried:

    Silicone hand grooming gloves?

Conditioner in the bath to help detangle?

    Detangling sprays?

    Mat splitters?

I’m just trying to find a way to keep him comfortable and avoid mats without triggering panic. Any tips, tricks, or success stories would be amazing!

    Thanks in advance

  • my dog suddenly started barking in the middle of the night

please help. my 2 year old yorkshire terrier started barking in the middle of the night. i usually keep her outside of my room but she has full access to the house. she usually doesnt bark unless theres an unfamiliar person or cats roaming around.

its been 4 days since she started this new habit of hers and i havent been able to sleep properly 💔 the first two days, i came out of the bedroom to go with her to her bed but she becomes excitable and lays down expecting me to pet her. however, the last 2 days i’ve been ignoring her. when the morning comes, she just becomes quiet again. i’m assuming she barks at night for attention but i’m not sure. does anyone have a solution for this?

  • Clean Up Pee on Oriental Rug

My beautiful dog peed on my expensive oriental rug before I could take him out this morning. I’ve used enzyme cleaners on regular carpet before, but does anyone have any recommendations for an oriental rug because I’m concerned about removing the coloring?

  • Young dog is anxious?

My lab border collie mix is around 2yrs ild and she has been trained to do virtually everything the basics and more however whenever my wife and I leave for a work day specifically she uses the facilities in her crate (she is crate trained and views it as her safe space) we have tried everything I feel like from leaving her out and about with the other animals, calming chews, tv being left on, covering her crate so it’s dark, and positive reinforcement upon coming home. Does anyone have any ideas as to how we can potentially solve this issue as I’m fresh out of them.

  • Mental enrichment for dog lying down?

Due to a severe case of arthritis and scar tissue (and other orthopedic issues), he isn't able to stand up by himself (and due to circumstances, even when helped, he doesn't have much tolerance for standing up). Don't worry! We are currently working on this, don't need advice on this aspect.

However, what I came to ask for help is for ideas focused on mental enrichment, that he can do lying down, since I have noticed signs of boredom. A lot of stuff that come up usually assume the dog is standing, not lying down, so I'm not sure how effective they would be for my dog.

So far, the only idea I found that could work for him is some nose work, in the form of snuffle mats. Which is an idea that I'm not sure it would be successful, because he does rip apart stuffed toys and other textiles stuff, but I'm willing to try it out.

He does have a bunch of slow feeders and a Kong, but I have been considering getting ones that are more complex, like the ones that are tiered.

    Any other ideas?

  • My dog has parvo. How do I clean furniture and clothing?

Like the title says. My dog has parvo (the vet never sent any reminders about her booster!), and I’m wondering how to clean everything that isn’t a hard surface. Everything online says bleach, but I obviously can’t throw bleach on my non white furniture and non white clothing. What are my options?
