This is my first puppy, a little 9 week old border collie I've had for two days. I know she's going to take time to house train but I feel like a complete disaster. I've only had adult dogs before so have never successfully house trained. Just today we had a two hour nap in the crate, then let out for a pee and play, then she had a big drink, so after an hour I figured she needed to go again. She tends to just sit in her outside pen if I'm not engaging with her and she watches the world go by, so I crated her for 10 minutes then let her back outside. She didn't go so I put her down on my floor for a second and of course she immediately went. Should I be doing the crate 10 minutes, outside, then crating again 10 minutes on repeat until she goes? Or is there another way I should be approaching this? My adult dogs have, even the non house trained ones, have gone into the garden and looked for pee spots, I've never had a dog here who just sits and waits for me to come and collect them again. I've dealt with so many adult behavioural problems but this little 3kg critter is getting my will down less than 48 hours into having her hahaha.
I am also 100% struck by the puppy blues but I'm going to try and stick it out because this pup doesn't complain about me being out of sight for a minute and right now she's chosen to settle in her crate next to me rather than on my lap, which is an option available to her. I can see the amazing adult she could become if I can get myself together and be enough for her. A full year of research and learning all the tricks seems to be thrown out when faced with a living baby dog!
