Not a dog owner; but want to ask something about dogs

so im the owner of two cats and today a really big dog (golden retriever i assume) came to my house along with its owner (not on purpose) and just STOOD AT MY DOOR staring at my cats😭😭 it was barking but it wasn’t growling and it just stood there. when its owner tried pulling it away it kept resisting😭😭 i cant tell if it was trying to hunt down my cat or was genuinely trying to play since this isn’t the first time i saw the dog outside my door trying to see my cat

can anyone tell me if the dog GENUINELY wanted to play with my cat or was just trying to hunt him down?
