Getting a second dog after 5 yrs? Male or female?

We have a 5 yr neutered toy poodle and have been thinking of getting a second dog. I work night shift 3/week (7p-7a )and my husband 5/week (8a-4p), so our dog was never alone. I sleep mostly during the days and my dog sleeps with me in the bed. Now I know that if I get a second dog between 8-12weeks old that I will have to do a lot of training and slowly introduce them to each other. I’m still a little unsure if we should get a one, I’m worried of not being able to sleep during the day coz my dog barks at every single noise and he might teach this to the new puppy.

But we want our dog to have a companion. He mostly sleeps all day but eager to play with other dogs when we go outside.I have only had male dogs my entire life so definitely not familiar with female dog. So I don’t if I should get a female or male dog, or neither? Any input will be appreciated.
