  • Helping 2 lab puppies be calm with each other

    Hi all.

I have a lovely 12 week old yellow female lab puppy. My best friend has a 10 week old male black lab puppy. They are from different litters.

Over the past two weeks we have done a few introductions with them. Predictably – very excited with each other. They chased each other and wrestled with each other for over 10 minutes until we did an enforced separation to calm them down. In their second meeting, we let them charge around together outside then went into our house to see if they would settle.

In short- they couldn’t. They were constantly at each other, trying to continue to run around and play. I put my girl in her crate but they continued to try to get to each other. I gave each a chewie, which they ate, but then tried to steal each others.

Today, a similar meeting where despite having them on leads on the house they just could not stop being crazy with each other.

Is there anything we can do to get them to not be non stop crazy with each other? Ideally we were going to do dog sitting for each other on our work from home days but at the moment it’s just so crazy we can’t have them together.

Note: there isn’t aggression between them, and who is ‘top dog’ seems to interchange. They are just constantly wrestling/running around and won’t stop unless enforced.

  • Should I care that my puppy sometimes goofs in crate/pen before settling for a nap?

My 13 week old Bernedoodle is overall doing good on crate/pen time. I’ve reinforced being calm and he can chill in the open crate+pen set up I have for him without whining or barking.

I’m doing 1 up / 2 down and he’s usually pretty good about settling quickly, I command him into the crate and give him some treats and he usually falls asleep on his own as I do stuff in the room or even if I leave to another room. However, sometimes he goofs off in the crate/pen before fully settling. He’ll dig at the bottom of the plastic crate, chew the edges, throw around his toys and bedding a bit. I don’t really mind it because he’s still quiet while doing it even if I leave the room but should I be changing this behavior?

It doesn’t really seem tied to his stimulation, for example this morning I went on a 15 min walk with him and then he ate breakfast from a puzzle toy so I would think he’s covered on both physical/mental but he’s been goofing off for about 20 mins after putting him down for the nap.

  • Waterproof dog harness that clips in the front?

Let me know if you have any product recs, I’d prefer a three point harness. It does need to clip in the front. Not looking to debate tools here…please don’t suggest a different one or criticize the tool itself.

I have been using the Petsafe 3-in-1 but it rusts when we walk by the ocean and that’s where I need it (birds). Thanks!

  • Crate recommendations? 🦮

Hi everyone! I’m wondering if anyone has found a crate that they like/recommend that is in a “furniture” style and also has a divider. My last dog had a wire crate in our bedroom and he was about 35lbs. We are bringing home a golden puppy in a few weeks and would love if the larger crate could double as “furniture” as it takes up so much space in our room. In the end, the most important thing is that the crate is well made/safe and includes a divider. Thank you!!! And please give all your pups a pet from me ☺️

  • Rescued Two Puppies Off the Streets

Hi! My husband and I rescued two puppies off the streets. Mustang and Sally. I haven't had puppies in over 10 years, so I am a bit rusty with training and I'm sure there are newer and better techniques now.

    1. They scarf down their food, I plan on getting slow feeders for them. Mustang will growl at Sally and push her out of the way and Sally will just go to Mustang's bowl. Obviously I know to separate them but since they are still puppies I'd like to correct this behavior.

    2. They jump. So far we turn around and ignore them until they sit or lay down, then we will give them attention and praise.

    3. Potty training. We have puppy pads, but in my past experience it's harder to potty train to go outside if they're taught to use a pad inside first. We have them for accidents just in case because they've never been indoors before. We take them outside with our older dog and they watch her, and use the bathroom.

    4. Chewing. We have toys galore of all kinds, the heavy duty kind and soft stuffed kinds. So far if we notice them mouthing or going to chew on something they shouldn't, we redirect them and give them something they can chew on. We try to give them the option of a hard chew or a soft plush to satisfy them.

    5. Walking on a leash. This has both my husband and I stumped. When we attach a leash to them, they just drop to the ground. They seem very uncomfortable and will not walk or move. I haven't had to deal with this myself so I'm not sure where to start here. Sally will flinch sometimes so I wonder if she has been mistreated before.

    6. Littermate syndrome. My mom has two dogs that are siblings, the same mother but two different litters one after the other. They are both males and they have gotten into the worst fights that have resulted in expensive vet bills, my mom now has them separated. I want to prevent any sort of littermate syndrome. What are some things I need to do?

I'm sure I might be missing some things, but we've had them less than 24 hours and so far this is what I've come up with. They are the sweetest and smartest babies ever. Any tips, tricks, or advice is greatly appreciated.

  • Playpen and 1 up 2 down gave me some freedom back

I feel sane!!!! I got my puppy on Halloween and I had no idea they needed 18 hours of sleep. Thank God I found that out shortly after getting her.

I also finally trained her to be calm in the playpen during her 1 up hours. From time to time she barks but it’s nothing like it was before. Feeding her lick mats and her kong in there has been so helpful!!!!

Ty for all the tips!!! I feel like I can be my couch potato self, go get my target pick up orders, get my haircut etc and not worry. I also think she is safer in the playpen. The other day she destroyed one of my LEGO sets which can be so dangerous for her if she were to swallow one.

    DONT UNDERESTIMATE PLAYPENS AND NAPS!!!
