  • Just need a little bit of advice

Hi all! I have a 9 month old mix puppy named TiTi. She has been a JOY, ugh I love her so much. She has a solid recall, she knows sit, down, stay, leave it and wait. I even trained her to follow the command "walk" for when she stops on our walks. We go on walks, run around in fields and sometimes even go to the lake. She is soo energetic and I try to fulfill her with lots of outings, play and enrichment toys. But no matter what, she does not settle!! She ran around in a field for 2 hours and came back home to run some more! At night, she scratches at my door and whines, wanting to run around even more! I see people say if you want a calm dog, then fulfill them. But I do and it doesn't work! I know I have to train it, but I have tried. It is the one thing she will NOT get besides crate training! I just need advice on what to do. She is a chihuahua mix, so I didn't expect this much energy. Have I not been fulfilling her properly?

  • 12 Week Old Mini-Schnauzer and I have no Idea

I just got my puppy on Nov. 5. I haven’t even had him for a whole week and I feel like I’ve made the worst decision of my life. He’s a 12 week mini schnauzer. The cutest little face. But I feel like I’m just a terrible dad. I’m hoarding him for two days because I’m visiting my mom, and no pets allowed. Who does that? Who gets a puppy and then boards him 3 days later? Smh. And just looking at my life and travel schedule, I knew a dog would be work and responsibility…I just didn’t know it would change my life so fast and so much. I don’t know what to do. Rehome? Stick it out? And then on top of that I don’t know what to do with him when I get him. And I feel I need to set up a playpen or something and not give him access to all of my apartment living room. And that’s another thing, I live on the 2nd floor of an apartment…getting him down every 5 minutes (that’s what some do the puppy training people say) is not really feasible. Idk yall, I need help or words or guidance. I just feel very overwhelmed and it hasn’t been a week yet and all I can think about is the next 15-17 years.

  • Good mental stimulation for a mixed herding breed

I’m just wanting to know in other people’s experience what kind of toys/puzzles etc have worked best for their very active herding breed? I have a (supposedly, still waiting on a DNA test) patterdale terrier/border collie x American Eskimo puppy (15 weeks old) and he is definitely a crazy boy who is in need of a lot of mental stimulation. I have puzzles, snuffle mats, treat dispensing toys, you name it. But I feel like I also need toys that are good for him that don’t require food because I feel like I’m overfeeding him since I have to load up practically 20 puzzles over the course of a few hours just to stimulate his brain enough for him to relax. I have a lab x Great Dane/poodle (2 yrs old now) as well who definitely required a good amount of mental stimulation as a puppy but she was not quite as wild as he lol. He does also get 2 naps a day that usually last 1-2 hours to try and give him decompression time but if he’s not stimulated enough before the naps he has a harder time winding down in his kennel. I also do try to train him for 5-10 mins a couple times a day. So anyway, basically I just need some input on what ppl have used for toys to get thru their active breed’s puppyhood bc he’s draining everything I’ve got lol

  • pumpkin for puppies! yay or nay?

we have two puppies (I am aware of littermate syndrome; doing a lot to prevent that) and one of them has been constipated. They are pretty young and I think we unfortunately got them too early (we were told they were older than they were, they were adopted but through a weird path).

Anyway, they are miniature schnauzers. Both male, intact, and around 2-3 pounds. They both eat the same amount of food but one of them drinks a little more water than the other which is where i think the constipation comes in. I have added water to their food but i’m trying to slowly decrease their wet food and encourage them to eat more of their kibble so it can help their teeth. I am getting off track but anyway, pumpkin. How much would I give them? and is this a health long term thing to be in their diet? the puppies and our adult dog love it we discovered. just don’t wanna make the issue worse.

  • Car harness for puppy

Our puppy will be born first of December and will come home 9ish weeks later.

Her adult weight will be in the neighborhood of 70lbs.

I am looking at harness attached to the LATCH system tethers/anchor on the back side of either the third row or 2nd row seats. Kong babies both a swivel anchor tether strap and a cargo protector that allows access to the tether points.

Now my next conundrum. The only CPS rated harness is sleepypod and $100+ is a lot to pay for a harness that will only last a few months.

What harnesses find a sweet spot for 'grow with your dog long enough' and 'not so expensive you're going to cry when they outgrow it' and made well enough that they protect your pup?

  • Older dog, won’t pee on balcony. Pees on walks mostly, but in emergencies prefers rug to balcony. Advice?

I just adopted an older dog, chihuahua mix, 10 pounds. She's potty trained, and has demonstrated that at my parents' (who have a backyard) and at my downtown apartment. However, she also drinks a lot of water and has a small bladder. She ideally would pee every 1.5-2 hours. She holds it in when she's penned in the bedroom, but she sometimes can't make it down the elevator and outside.

I have a balcony, decent size, mostly surrounded by 3 walls and a ceiling though. Maybe it's because of that, but she won't go pee on the balcony. However she has twice peed on the rug in my living room. The latter time, we had just been on the balcony for 5 minutes trying to get her to pee, walked inside, and peed within a couple seconds (same spot). I have a reusable pee pad, and today I got an artificial grass patch and pee attractant spray. She has no interest. I have a fresh patch arriving on Tuesday.

I've now placed a pee pad over the area of the rug that she's already peed, in case she does it again, however I'd like to get her peeing on the balcony for the long term, since it's quicker and easier than going out, and currently she's also pretty nervous in the streets.

Any advice on getting her to go on the balcony? Does she consider it "indoors" since it's covered? Why does she prefer rug to artificial turf? I dog sat a dog in the past who also refused to pee in the balcony, who also had accidents inside. Never solved it. Really hoping that's not the case again, especially with how stressed the new dog gets in the streets.
