New dachshund puppy who seems to hate sleep!
Hi everyone, it's only been two nights now since I got mine and my partner's puppy, he's a beautiful and sweet, black and tan dachshund! We have adopted him at 10 weeks old from a breeder. I'm currently in the morning after night two typing this, it's about 10 to 6am and he's finally gone to sleep or whined himself to sleep! I have work from 9am (online) so i was worried he'll keep on going till before the morning meeting. Hes been wonderful but the issue is, he keeps whining at night and I would think he needs the the toilet for wees wees and poops but he never goes! Hes halfway to potty train, yesterday he stood in front of the patio door and I knew he needed a wee but missed the cue so he peed on the floor. I was so happy he was finally learning he has to do wees wees outside the patio.
Its just so tough at the moment, he whines and cries almost every night so I take him out but he doesn't need it. We're doing what we can, he has a heartbeat plushie with a heatable sack inside, a fluffy blanket and bed. We slept with him in the same room first night but we decided to be brave the second night and go to our room and left him in the crate after wee wees and tiring him out. He started crying at around 2am and my partner needed to sleep, (he hasnt slept since he tended to him) so I took over. Hes sleeping now, and I've covered his crate while I've just lied down next to it with a pillow and blanket.
I do wonder if we're doing something wrong or missed something, and I just want some reassurance that it will get better and he won't whine so much anymore??? Do you think we should just persevere, stick to our routine and bit by bit distance ourselves?
I work from home alot, so he will spend more time with me. I'm trying to be fuss free at nightly potties but im always afraid we have given the impression, whine = our attention. I've stubbornly ignored him as he didnt go 4 times now to the potty and im worried about the neighbours as he gets a little loud.
I dunno guys, its just night two and we feel defeated… I think I just need to air out my frustration in the puppy trenches online and know that things will get better..!! We love him so much, hes such a great addition to our family and what we always wanted.
Any ideas you guys might have, please let me know! Other than the nightly yowls, he is a very sweet pup and he seems to even like people as he wanted to go to the postman in the morning! 😂

learning paw command
hi everyone this is my first post so sorry if it’s not up to standard.
my puppy randomly learned the paw command but i’m not sure how to reinforce it. for context, i have an 8 month old irish doodle (spare me the doodle comments pls) and i wipe her paws off everytime we go outside. i normally say “paw” as im wiping them off so that she learns the association. when we lay down together on the couch, i normally raise my hand and she places her paw in mind. however, i don’t say “paw” there. that’s just something we do.
this evening i got home and realized that when i stuck my hand out, she sat and gave me her paw. i wasn’t sure what to say but was so excited that she understood what “paw” meant. however, ive taught her slightly backwards. i ran to get her a treat and had her do it again so i can positively reinforce the behavior and she did! however, after i gave her the treat she began to get hyper fixated on the smell of the treat on my hand as opposed to offering her paw and the training piece fell through.
i’m sorry for the long rant but im a FTDO and im still learning! any advice on what to do here?

Our sweet girl turned 9 weeks today and we could not be more in love!
Just a positive experience in a sea of puppy blues –
She’s been eating well, paws at the door to go potty (already!!!), sleeps all night in her crate without a peep, has learned her name, and how to sit on command all in one week! She also LOVES to snuggle.
I read so many horror stories about puppy blues/potty training/lack of sleep that I started to worry and second guess before we even picked her up. Although she can get nippy when she’s extra tired, she’s the best girl and I already can’t imagine my life without her 🙂
This sub helped so much in the weeks leading up to her arrival and we couldn’t be more thankful for all of the tips/advice!

Advice on potty training my puppy
Hi everyone! So my husband and I are getting our very first puppy! I have a couple of years experience training dogs (nothing professional just minor things for family pets) and I am a little confused with how to tackle our specific needs. Our boy will be around 7 weeks, he will only have his first round of shots at the time we get him. It is super important that we are able to train him to go outside and not just on pads. We have pads available, both reusable and the disposable types. But, the issue that I’m noticing is we don’t have a fenced yard. We live in a rural part of our road but I know for a fact we have had adult dogs from down the road that at least walk on our yard. ( not frequently, but once or twice in the last year) So is there any way I could take my boy outside to go without risking him to Parvo or should we stick with pads indoors until his last round of shots? And if we do have to resort to pads inside until his shots are complete, will we be able to retrain him to just going outside since he may grow accustomed to going on the pads?
(And please no suggestions like getting a fenced yard or shock collars or anything like wise, we just want to use a leash or harness and take him out when he needs to go by alerting using a bell 🙂 )
Thanks in advance!

My puppy physically resists the crate?
My labrador puppy Gus is 15 weeks and I got him yesterday. Everytime I try to get him in the crate he protests and the only way is for me to shove him in. Once he's in there, he settles down after a few minutes. I'm currently feeding him his food and treats in there, but he's extremely food motivated and overrides the fear lol.
I've been trying to do everything right and the internet says do NOT force him in there. But he whines if he's not snuggled up right next to me LOL. Although I am worried he's gonna wake up and get into something while I'm sleeping. I like him sleeping with me but my research says to crate train him early and then add bed sleeping after hes trained. So what do I do…?

5 Year Old Pug Marking on My Bed
Hi All — Would love any advice! I recently adopted a 5 year old rescue pug who is truly the sweetest, most affectionate, gentle boy. I'm such a big fan and so happy to have him home. Last night was his first night with me and, after going on a walk where he peed and pooped, he got upstairs and peed on my comforter.
I immediately took him back outside and rewarded him when he peed there. When we came back in, I started grabbing cleaning supplies and deoderizer and… he did it again. He did it a 3rd time after I had stripped the comforter from the bed right before I carried it to the washer.
I cleaned everything up and used Nature's Miracle so I thought I was doing okay. Until, this morning when he climbed onto my bed and peed alll over my pillow. Again, this was after going out for a walk. Again, I stripped the bed and got everything into the wash then poured Nature's Miracle on the mattress after I cleaned it.
I kept him out of my room all day until about an hour ago when I had to go in for something and he followed me. I figured he would be supervised and I was only going to be in for a second so it would be fine. I set a clean shirt down on the bed to change into, turned my back for a literal second, and in that time, he jumped up on the bed and peed all over my sweatshirt and mattress.
When I adopted him, I was told that he was "pretty close" to housebroken, but these also don't feel like true "accidents," but like he's marking my bed?
I love him a lot and know things take time, but am definitely desperate to figure out how to fix this. Any advice would be super welcome!! Thank you!!
