  • Biggest decision of my life

So, my boyfriend and I (both 29) are at that stage of life where getting a dog feels like the next big commitment…

We live in an apartment, but we’re not couch potatoes. We’re out hiking, hitting the beach basically every weekend and on long walk and park every day. He runs a lot (like 15-20k every couple of days) and the dog would stay at my parents’ place whenever we’re not working from home they have two very sweet, well-behaved medium schnauzers who are down to chill with other dogs. So the dog wouldn’t be alone much, if ever.

We’re drawn to big dogs. Love the look and personality of Irish Setters (a close friend has one) and German Wirehaired Pointers (but reading about pointers energy levels has discouraged us). I’d say I’m a decent amateur trainer and totally willing to level up with classes or a program if needed. So: thoughts on these breeds or any other breed you can think of?

  • Older dog biting at new pup..

when the pup came for the first day, my older dog was fine (1.5y) and was even cuddling the pup. However, come 2nd day he’d snap at the young pup when we gave it attention.

If i’m not home and they’re left alone, they’d be ok, playing or the pup might hide from him. it happened about twice, he bit the pup when i was playing w him on the bed so i know that’s not natural ground. But what can i do about this situation?

I’ve placed the little one in a crate and letting him out every now and then.

  • Rescue Chiweenie won’t let me love our dog

Our 1yo rescue Chiweenie we've had for about a month came to us pretty traumatized, but she has been really resilient and is adapting fast. We adore her, and she is getting along pretty well with our 5yo Chipit (Chitbull?) so far, but the biggest problem we are having is that she won't let us pet him or let him cuddle with us. She forces herself in-between him and us if he tries to sit next to us, she will bite his face like she wants to play with him if we try to pet him, and she will run and take his spot on the bed before he gets there. It's starting to make my dog depressed and it's not making me very happy either.

I want to assure you, this little gal is NOT hurting for attention. She is an unstoppable force of nature and a complete ham in a house of 3 adults who love her and work from home. She is in somebody's lap most of the day unless it's by her own design. But when I try to pay attention to our other dog, who has been extremely patient throughout this, she acts like we are going to instantly forget about her. We've done the dual petting, and in the first few weeks we did everything fairly synchronously. We do try separating them so they get their own activities, like taking one for a walk while my husband plays with the other in the back yard, or quiet time in another room behind a closed door. We do a lot of "group snuggles" in order to fit both dogs in, but that kinda feels like a shared birthday. It would be nice to not have to do that and be able to just love my dog when I want.

  • Best DNA service?

I have two mutts, and I've finally decided to take the plunge.

Do people have preferences for one service over another? Cost is an issue.

As far as I can tell, there are five different services.

    Embark

    Wisdom

    Basepaws

    Ancestry

    DNA My Dog

Any others? Does anyone have experience with one of them? I'm really looking for recommendations.

    Thanks.

  • Is it normal for my 8 month year old female dog to completely change behaviour after her first ever cycle?

She used to be a little menace but she just finished her first cycle a while ago and she's the sweetest thing now, still very playful but no longer has any destructive tendencies, a lot more obedient as well, I can also say for sure she's not pregnant, I thought she would go back to her usual self after..I'll always love her no matter what but ngl I appreciate that's she's a lot more chill now.

  • Feeding advice please!

We got our sweet sweet (demon) pup on Halloween and since bringing him home, his stools have been more on the ‘sticky’ consistency side.

He’s a 10 week old corgi (can’t tell you how much he weighs I’m afraid as he won’t sit still long enough for me to check).

He’s still on what the breeder was giving him (split into 3 meals): 105g purina pro plan dry biscuits 400g butchers wet food

He’s not big on treats so we use biscuits for training, but am I missing something? I would hate to not be giving my pup the right food but obviously it’s important to know – TYIA.

  • Crate or childs travel cot for a new puppy at night time?

I’m getting a new puppy in about a week. I already have an older dog and i’m going to put up a puppy pen for keeping the puppy separated from my adult dog while not being supervised or for when my adult dog has had enough with play time.

I dont plan to use crates once shes potty trained and safely integrated with my adult dog.

For the bedroom at night where theres less room, i want to keep her separated from my bigger dog but still close together so they’ll hopefully grow use to each other without her being able to irritate him whilst we’re asleep and risking her getting hurt if she pushes her luck too much with him.

I had the idea of using a babies travel cot that i can get very cheap second hand on FB market place. Is this a good idea or would i be better off getting a traditional crate to keep her safe while we’re sleeping?

  • how do i make my service dog not behave like moms dog

Hello, im getting a service dog soon, well a puppy to train as service dog. But i live with my mom who has this HORRIBLE behaved dog, like constant barking even in the night, chasing and biting the cats, biting me til bleeding and more. If my dog starts to do this he will be rejected from the service dog training. How do i make sure my dog wont start doing these weird things? The barking gives me panic attacks because its extremely loud (you hear it on the othwr side of the street when the dog is in our house) and the biting me and my cats really scares me. I barely sit downstairs because of that dog so me and my own dog will mainly sit in my upstairs part when the other dog is downstairs (its not home from 9 to 5 because of my moms work and because i refuse to dogsit that dog). How do i make sure my dog won't start barking too because it constantly hears the other dog barking? Do i keep them apart so my dog doesnt start biting me and the cats too? My dog is gonna be a labrador so not a very difficult breed, my moms is this weird looking Hungarian dog with dredlocks, and yes it bites hard. Hard enough to have almost killed my Norwegian forest cat (now i try to keep them apart as much as i can, which works except when my mom js lets them be, because she doesnf accept my boundaries around the dog for me and my cats). The dog also bit me hard enough for me to bleed, this happens around once a week. The dog is already 8 years old so no puppynor teenage behaviour

  • Puppy refuses to potty outside now that it’s cold out. Help!

I have an almost 6 month old Boston terrier/french bull dog mix. He was doing great on potty training for the last few months but now that it’s cold, he holds it and goes when he comes inside. Sometimes I can get him to pee outside if I wait long enough but then he poops inside. It’s driving me insane and I’m doubting whether or not I can handle a dog. He does this if it’s below about 40 degrees and unfortunately where we live, it’s only above that half the year. He refuses to wear a jacket, by the time I’ve wrestled it onto him he’s peed all over me in the struggle. Any advice?! What can I do?
