  • Traveling abroad, 1 month w small dog

I do not have a dog yet but would like to get a small dog likely a shih tzu adult from a shelter. I am lucky enough to travel for 1 month to Europe each year.

I’m deciding whether to wait until life slows down to get a dog (aka maybe retirement) or if I could maybe bring them with me successfully.

While I know travelling is “possible” with small dogs I’d love to hear first hand experience travelling for extended periods with your dog (good bad and the ugly)

  • Need help identifying kibble in a photo, any suggestions where to post? Found clusters of kibble laced with some kind of poison hidden outside in yard and park.

Wanting to identify the kibble in a photo in hopes that it may help with finding the person who is doing it. Small town Ontario, Canada. Is there a subreddit that might be a reasonable place to post the photo?

  • Puppy training commands

This post may be a bit trivial compared to some other people questions and struggles so apologies

I have an English Springer Spaniel from working line, so as you can imagine, he is very intelligent and loves to please.

For this reason he has been so easy to train and at 3.5 months he can sit, stay, come, leave, drop, place, off, toilet and even spin.

When training he just is not grasping down, he will only go down if a take my entire hand to the ground with the treat however, in a normal setting when I say down he will lie down!

Any ideas on how to get him to do this during training?

For context, I have only attempted and success with down on command on the sofa when we are both on it and he is unsettled, but I want to be able to teach him to go to his place and then down for whilst I am busy in the kitchen which I need him to consistently follow through my command for this to be possible.

I’m aware he is only 3.5 months and he is doing amazing for his age, I just can’t understand how he can understand the more difficult commands easier than a simple down! 😂

  • Napping without a crate or pen

    Hi!

I’ve got an 11-week-old whippet puppy, who is… something for sure. He is completely incapable of settling without me or my husband there next to him, and sometimes not even then. He gets horrible, violent zoomies that draw blood from me, and will sometimes be awake for over 3 HOURS without settling. Then when he does finally fall asleep, he wakes at the smallest sound and the whole thing starts again. I’m completely incapable of working from home, and he can’t be left alone as he’ll start destroying things pretty much immediately even I’m just behind a gate, not even out of the apartment.

I know everyone’s first instinct will be to tell me to crate train, but my problem is that I live in a country with extremely tight animal welfare laws. Crating (or confining to a puppy pen without supervision) is strictly illegal unless by vet’s orders due to illness or during transport, so it’s simply not an option. Please don’t argue about the law, as there’s nothing I can do about it and I’m on the verge of crying 24/7 as it is.

My question is, does anyone here have experience with an extremely active and attached puppy who is for any reason unable to be crated or confined to anything less than a full room? How do you help your puppy calm the f down and sleep? How do you teach separation?

We live in a two bedroom apartment with an open kitchen / living room. The dog is gated out of the second bedroom (which is my office) and the entryway, and the main bedroom door is closed during the day, but he has (and legally more or less has to have) access to the living/kitchen area. He came to us at 8 week old. He is by far the most active out of his entire litter, and nobody else seem to have issues getting their pup to settle like we do.

I really appreciate any advice. I’m so discouraged and anxious and frustrated and just generally in tears constantly. I’m so scared we won’t be able to make this work and we’ll have to rehome him when we’ve (despite everything) already grown so attached to him.

  • Purpose of a playpen vs a crate?

I'm getting ready to bring my puppy home and getting confused about the purpose of a play pen vs crate.

How do I make him like the crate? Should I put the crate ib the playpen? Where does he eat? I keep seeing to feed in the crate but won't that make him associate crate with food, not sleep?

    Any tips help, thanks!!!

  • Is it possible for puppies for pee for attention?

I’m probably crazy but my puppy usually can hold it for at least 45 min. I’ve been pretty actively involved when she is awake like I play with her or at least sit by her.

But today I need to get back into focusing on my work and finding a routine that works for me and other responsibilities. I had her playing in the pen by herself but she can still see me. I ran outside with her beforehand and I did notice she was drinking a lot of water but she made 3 accidents within a 45 to 1 hour time frame. Clearish pees so maybe she did drink too much water, but is it really normal to take a puppy out more frequent than 20 minutes? I set an alarm for 30 min and she pees like 2 min before.

She is 14 weeks old maltipoo shes small so I get having a smaller bladder but this feels abnormal.

Can I get some help? 😭

  • How do you physically remove your puppy from your arm?

Training a puppy on not biting. We have decided to go with the route of gently pushing the puppy away and holding for a few seconds before offering something else. Praising if going for the new item, repeat if not.

Still no matter the method, how do you physically remove a puppy bite? My hand and arms are covered in new cuts.

Dog is on your hand, growling and tearing. You can't jerk away, that excites the dog and could hurt you or the dog some.

But it isn't reasonable to wait forever. What is your strategy for getting the dog to stop tearing into you?

  • Stimulating games for terrier

Can anyone recommend any types of stimulating games for terrier pups? Feel like everything is becoming a bit repetitive now and wanting to get a bit more creative to keep him interested in playtime and tire him out!!
