  • Quality stimulation/training tips?

We have a 4 month old shelter pup (German shepherd/husky/standard poodle mix) who has just been fantastic. We got her at 11 weeks.

She’s been great in her crate and consistently does sit, lay down, stay, leave it, come, helicopter etc. I’m just looking for commands/routines to keep her stimulated going forward. She is so freaking smart I need to keep her learning or else she’ll be trouble.

Edit for more info: she goes to parks, goes to work with me, just spent a weekend at the beach, she’s amazing in the car, she loves her snuffer mat, playing with her cat siblings and loves fetch.

She’s recently learned to unzip our couch cushions (thankfully without ripping them open). I just need high reward puzzle solving stiff for this smart girl!

But yes any advice! I hope it isn’t too late to train her to not jump on ppl when she’s excited cu she’s a big dog and ppl are terrified of them as is.

  • Doggy dementia quality of life

My dog (14) has pretty severe doggy dementia. She paces in circles for literal hours. She eats very well and her body is in great shape. She goes on walks well, she runs and jumps with my other dogs. She no longer plays or comes when her name is called, she’s only cares about eating. I have to give her trazadone before bed, otherwise she’ll pace all night in circles. Is there anything that can help my girl?

  • guilt for possibly returning a dog to animal shelter

Hello, so i recently adopted a medium sized dog from an animal shelter. He is 2 years old and very sweet. He is a golden retriever/cocker spaniel mix. Previously, I had only had small dogs and he is the first “larger” dog I have had. I live in an apartment by myself. I am still in school so I am gone for hours a the day for class. He is very clingy, following me everywhere I go. The main issue I am running into is his energy levels. He is high energy and I am not sure I have the ability to meet his requirements. Also his strength is hard to manage on walks when he wants to chase things and will pull me with him. I feel guilty wanting to return him but I think he will be a better fit with a family who can be at home with him or have a yard for him to run around in. I really wanted this to work but I feel so unprepared to have him and I’m not sure in the best fit for him? Should I go through returning him before he gets used to living with me or what should I do? I want him to have the best life possible but I am not sure that’s with me. Also he was a very popular dog at the shelter so he is bound to get adopted if he were to go back!

Edit: I just want to clarify that I do walk him a decent amount but I don’t think it’s enough compared to if were to have a house with a yard. I take him out 4-5 times a day. I’ll take him on a 1.5-2 hour walk in the morning, a hour walk walk mid day and a 2 hour walk at night. I’ll also take him out to a little dog park my apartment complex has for about 15-30 minutes in between his walks. Even with all these walks I find he has a lot of energy which is why I’m not sure I am able to meet his needs because I still have to go to class and tend to my responsibilities. Also I will admit and this is my fault I didn’t do enough research on owning a dog because I’ve only had dogs that did not have high energy and were okay not walking as much as this dog.

  • Teenage dog fomo regression

My 1 year 3 month old dog recently (4 days ago) began whining when left alone but only when we leave in the evenings. She has always been good about being left alone for a few hours, she went through a few week phase when we moved but has been over it for several months. She whines for 5-10 minutes really loud and then sleeps. She gets off leash hiking most days plus short sniff walks and training throughout the day and sleeps fine so I am not worried about the exercise being the factor.

I guess I am wondering if others have experienced this? I recently got a new job with a slight schedule change but that keeps me at home with her so really does not affect her. Could this just be a teenage drama thing? Or do I need to be worried and get going on separation anxiety training asap?

  • Opinion on martingale collar

Right now I walk my dog with a slip harness leash and it’s worked really well with us with the only short coming being in crowds there’s no traffic hold. To aid in this I have a traffic hold that attaches to her collar but because of her odd neck and head a properly fit flat collar can still slide off of her easily, I was looking at maybe getting a martingale to attach the traffic hold to so she can’t back out of her collar. She has never escaped before but I worry.

  • Experience leaving your dog at home because it’s best for them?

I got my dog when I was 22, I'm 25 now and moving out. The issues is my dog is a rescue and had extreme separation anxiety when I first got her, I've been in and out of jobs and school so I got to spend time with her for long stretches, when I'm home she's attached to me. But lately I've been working full time and I notice that when I come home she's spending time with the family members that are home with her more, she'll sit in the lounge or be with my mum and then come to me later when it's time to sleep. I think it's because they sneak her food when they eat and I don't (she's honestly big and greedy) but I'm so torn on finding a place we can both stay at (which is HARD) or just leaving her here, I'm moving about 40 minutes away.

There is almost always someone at home and if there is not then there are 5 other pets (1 other dog), I want to do what's best for her but I also feel like I am what's best for her. They overfeed her, they don't walk her, they don't bathe her. So I don't want to leave her but at the same time my dog HATES being alone. When I leave she stays next to someone the whole day. She hates being alone. I just don't know what to do.

  • Looking for an harness for a deep chest dog with a small neck

My dog Sezar is 4 and always had a difficult time with harness. He is a rescue, he looks a bit like a whippet, with a narrow, deep chest. His chest make 26 inch and his neck, 14 inches, and he is 17 kg. I am located in Canada

All of the harness I ever tried end up looking sooner or later like a backpack that is too little, like its trying to pass over his shoulder.

Any harness that would fit an awkward body comfortably ?
