  • 6 month old puppy with BIG bark

We just brought home our 6 month old pitty mix puppy Poppy from the shelter 2 days ago. Shes getting along really well with our 5 year old female pitty mix Olive, and vice versa. She is so sweet, very gentle, chill for a puppy and a fast learner.

She does, however, have a very loud and intimidating bark. She barks at our cats, barks at other dogs/people while we’re walking, barks at kids, barks at her own reflection in the mirror, barks at things out the window, etc. we live in an apartment building with lots of other dogs so this is becoming very inconvenient and stressful for neighbor dogs. Once she meets the dogs/people she is silent, playful, gentle and sweet, not bothering adult dogs who aren’t into playing etc.

I’m hoping to get some advice on how to combat the barking, especially on walks and with the cats. As of now I get her attention if I can, make her sit and reward her when she is sitting and quiet. We plan to socialize her often at our local dog park and with our friends/families dogs, but I would love any insight from those of you who have overcome this!

  • My Dog is neutered but still has "urges" after 7 years — why do you think that is?

My beautiful dog Alfie is amazing, so kind, so loving, always attentive and listens (for the most part), is receptive to commands, doesn't bark (only at squirrels), barely gives me any issues. But one thing I can never get him to stop doing is humping. I adopted him at 8 months old (he's currently almost 7 years old) and he was already spayed and neutered.

Why do you think he still humps guests? or me when I hug my wife or son? At this point i find it hilarious, but it would be nice to get him to stop haha.

  • Megathread: Why Does My Dog Do That?

Does your dog turn his head when he hears an odd noise? Does your dog bury their food with your pants? This is the thread to ask why.

Please keep this thread to non-medical issues only.

  • Hartz DuraPLay balls vs Furhaven balls

Was wondering if anyone has compared the two.

I have two belgian malinois and they love the Hartz balls, specially for the soft, slippery and bouncy aspect; they drop and chase them like cats. But they are bit pricey ~$20 vs the Furhaven ones that are ~$8. Are they harder rubber and less chewy?

I'll probably just order a set to test but figured I'd ask first…. Not so much for the cost, I have tons of balls already :

  • Megathread: Pet Insurance

Which pet insurance is best for you? Are there any that may cover your dog's current treatment? Did your dog get injured during the waiting period and want to know if you're covered?

    Here's the place to ask.

Do know we cannot help you here with medical concerns, and lying or not disclosing things to the insurance company is illegal so we don't allow that either.

  • Soul Dog Loss

I have had my dog since I was an early teen. He's 17 now, and I can tell his time is coming. I don't know what else to say about this other than I don't think I will survive his death. He is everything and more to me. Does anyone have any advice? I don't want him to suffer, but I just can't let him go.

  • Rambunctious Puppy?!

I love my 4.5month old pomapoo. I do! He's a cute stinker. I mean, the type of cute that has people stop us on the street or dang near hurl themselves at us to say hi to him. Wonderful! However!!! His energy IS THROUGH. THE. ROOF, especially with people. He has one more shot to go (he is basically teacup size, so they spread out his shots), so we still carry him about except for going potty outside. My issue is that if he sees a person, he is losing his -entire- mind. I mean, one time while trying to poo, a neighbor passed by and he went darting after them with the poo still dangling from his butt (🙈). We take him to puppy classes and our trainer has said that it's better to have a confident, high energy puppy then a nervous, shy one because they'll grow up and be a lot more chill. I want to believe it, I really do, but how do I get him to be a lot more behaved when he sees people? I mean, he will squirm like MAD in our arms when he sees a person and sometimes it's hard to hold onto him (we've already accidentally dropped him on freaking concrete because of this, so now we have boa constrictor level grip on him to keep that from ever happening again).

He knows the command "Wait" and pretty darn well, but even when we tell him to do that, he's still trying to hurl himself at others. I've been working indoors on trying to get all four paws on the ground to keep him calm before rewarding, but once outside? We can't do that currently, so he's just trying to full body launch to lick them to death. Is this just a waiting game toward maturity or more work on calm behavior around humans?

  • Is sending a timid puppy to a small home daycare a bad idea?

Hey guys, I need some advice. I recently adopted a 5 month old puppy, and I’ve had someone coming for 4 hours to watch the puppy and my other adult dog on my 10 hour work days. That person isn’t available any longer, and I’m panicking a bit on what to do. I’m considering a home daycare (max of 10 dogs), but she’s very timid around other dogs, and I’m worried that super playful dogs will be too much. (She’s going to weekly puppy play classes to help with this!) what do you guys think? As long as the owner steps in, and helps other dogs leave her alone if they’re being too much, could it be okay? And hopefully be a positive socialization thing?

    Thanks for any advice!

  • Louie the Lab. Insurance the Joke

    Hello,

My dog Louie the Lab had to have surgery not long ago. And when we try to get reimbursed from SPOT Pet Insurance, they were not helpful at all. Basically, saying that it existed before rescuing Louie and that they are refusing any for of financial compensation. Right now, me and my Partner are at our ends of this financial rope and need any help we can get. I am writing here hoping someone could donate to our GoFundMe for this. This is our last resort before we have to go seek a loan and potential hurt ourselves even more. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
