  • Puppy signaling to go outside constantly

I have a 7 month old Cavalier who is great at telling us when she needs to go out. The problem is that she‘s started signaling that she wants to go outside CONSTANTLY.

She gets a 30 min walk at 7am and I start work (wfh) at 8am. Around 8:45/9 she’ll start standing by the door and yipping to go out. I have of course been obliging as I want her to continue to ask when she needs to go, but she never actually needs to use the bathroom on these trips; she just wants to go out. This is obviously both annoying and not always possible to indulge when I’m working.

I usually run her around or play tug inside for a few minutes when we get back from our morning walk to try to burn off any residual energy, but it doesn’t seem to be discouraging this desire to go out. She also gets breakfast in a snuffle mat and has plenty of chews/toys around so she’s got a lot of outlets for boredom, but none compare to the lure of outdoors. Any ideas for how to discourage her asking to go out all the time without discouraging asking to go when she needs it?

  • Megathread: Why Does My Dog Do That?

Does your dog turn his head when he hears an odd noise? Does your dog bury their food with your pants? This is the thread to ask why.

  • People who have owned multiple purebred dog breeds over your lifetime, which has been your favorite breed to own?

Looking for people who have had a lot of experience with owning different dog breeds and am curious what your favorite has been. Or if you’re a dog trainer, who your favorite breeds to work with have been.

  • Wildest dog names?

I really want to name my dog hand banana but I don’t want to be that guy with the dog with a name out of left field. Is it still normal enough despite being a reference to ATHF?

  • Dog ramps for car?

So, what does everybody doing for bigger dogs that don't love getting in and out of the car? I have a 65 lb mix that just has always hated getting in and out of the car so she was a puppy. She recently hurt her knee somehow, and now I'm even more nervous about her jumping in and out. I've been looking at ramps but she sits in the back seat and it doesn't look like any of them fit with the back door. Then I saw it maybe she could go in the back, like the trunk area? But I don't love the idea of her being so far back and I worry about somebody rear-ending me. This has never been an issue for me before with my past dog so I just wondering what everybody else does? She's only a year and a half but I really don't want any joint problems down the line either. Anyone have specific ramps they use or want to share how they handle it? 🤪🐾

  • Am I feeding my puppy too much?

My puppy is 13 weeks old this week and I've had him a week. When I got him I was told that he eats 4 tablespoons of puppy kibble, 4 times a day. Initially he wasn't eating it all by the evening so I reduced to 3 times a day (4 tablespoons) and he'd graze all day and still leave a bit at night. I'm also using training treats throughout the day so I didn't feel bad about reducing a feed.

Within a 24-hour period, he's doing at least 6 solid poos a day. It's starting to get me down how much poo I'm cleaning up. I reduced his evening feed to 2 tablespoons, especially because he often has some kibble left over from lunch. I'm still picking up 6 poos a day.

Am I over feeding him? Is this normal? I've not got him any training treats today and we're still on target for 6 poos today.

  • my puppy doesn’t eat his food

My 8-month old puppy doesn’t eat his kibble or wet food, and we are at our wits end trying to feed him.

He starves himself for hours and sleeps the whole day, but after his evening walk he runs up to us asking to eat our food. He doesn’t seem to be sick or anything, since he has energy and is very excited for walks.

We did think that he might be lonely, but he is never left home alone, and he always has at least 2-3 people at home to play with him and keep him company.

We’ve tried everything. Wet food from all brands for puppies, different flavors, kibbles of different brands, and nothing has worked.

He always runs to us asking for our food, so we started giving him mashed boiled carrots, or white rice with unsalted fish, which he eats some days and ignores some days all depending on his mood.

It’s extremely draining for us to run behind him and force-feed him just to get him to eat. When my friends come home he eats little kibble because they bribe playtime with him as a way to get him to eat. We have tried that too, but it just doesn’t seem to work 🙁

  • Work from home training / engagement / separation anxiety

I have a puppy coming home with me in a few weeks and I work from home, which is great for being around, but I worry that it will cause more severe separation anxiety when I’m not around in the future. Is there any training to keep the puppy engaged while I’m working and to mitigate separation anxiety in the future?
