  • Anyone interested in adopting a dog(or two) in Bali? (Sterilized and treated by vet)

To start with, I’m just a tourist passing through. We’ve noticed that most of the “free-roaming” dogs here in Bali are in pretty ok shape, comparing to other SEA countries. Until we came across two few days ago … we’ve tried to contact local rescues but they are all overpopulated. They have provided a tons of advice and guidance and asked us to step in if possible.

So we did – we went to talk the villagers and found out that these two dogs do not have an owner, but they do get food from the villagers here and there. The villagers were kind enough to let us offer help … so we’ve lined up a few things with a pet catcher and vet – long story short, these two dogs are with the vet now and I’ll go there in a bit again.

They are both absolute angels – didn’t throw a fit when we tried to catch them, didn’t make any noises or did anything at all the whole car ride to the vet. The black one is just a baby (6-7months, 5kg) and is so, so gentle and sweet. The yellow one should be around 7 years old (9kg) and we think he’s a terrier mix.

We will be leaving tomorrow and I’m just trying my luck here – I’ll be paying for the sterilization and all the vaccines etc. If no one is interested then we will have to bring them back to the original village which truly breaks my heart. I wish I could bring them back to where we are from but it’s just impossible right now 🙁

Happy to send more pics and videos through over PMs if anyone is interested. Maybe we could also help with logistics with the vet / pet taxi etc if needed .

    Thanks!

  • Sleepless Near Seattle

Hello reddit, my wife and I are first time puppy parents (grew up with dogs our whole lives but never had an active hand in training) and are approaching our wits end with bedtime as our Golden approaches 6 months.

Our night time routine has been fairly set since she was about 3 months but as of the last week or two every night has become a small battle of wills. We start trying to get a puppy down for bed usually between 6:45~7:30pm depending on when she finishes dinner (she's slept every night in her crate since we brought her home). She's still got some hesitancy about going in the crate so we start a little early so we can get her coaxed in, lots of positive reinforcement and treats. This is where the trouble begins.

Until around 2 weeks ago she'd trott in just fine, do a couple circles, maybe bark a little, and then settle in to sleep. She was waking up around 2:30am but then after a quick potty trip was back down until the day starts at 5:30am. Now when we are able to get her in (after much biting, running around like a fool, and treats) she'll bark nonstop for however long she's in for. We read in other threads to not make the crate a negative space so after 15~30 minutes of barking we try a reset (giving her water, taking her down to potty, letting her out of the crate but keeping her in the bedroom) and then the cycle starts again until she finally decides she's had enough being awake and will settle in for the night until 5:30 when it's time to get up. Some times this only takes an hour, the other night it took nearly 3 hours of this before she settled in for bed around 12:30am.

Since we've gotten her the bedtime mood has been the same: Fan pointed at the crate, puppy instrumental YouTube video on the TV at a medium volume, crate cover with just the front up, and a bedside lamp on its lowest setting to have a tiny bit of light in the room.

We're looking for whatever advice, reassurance, or support you have to offer. We can't keep on like this and are hoping someone's input can help us make a positive change. If needed I can post our full day routine in the comments.

  • How do I potty train my 2 month old shihtzu?

This is our first dog and although I did a ton of reading, it’s not going as I expected. I read that puppies need to go after naps, meals and play time but she follows none of that. She doesn’t pee when she is out but when she is in the house she just goes on a pee spree and pees multiple times with maybe 5 minutes intervals. She doesn’t ever poop after meals. Sometimes it’s 3 hours later, some times 2 hours. I got her pee pads but she does not use them at all! I feel as if I’m always cleaning up the mess. We live in an apartment and Im afraid our place is going to start to stink soon.

    Please help!

  • Adopting my first apartment dog what should I know?

    Hey everyone,

I just applied to adopt a rescue pup after a few years without a dog. My last one passed away, and I’ve really missed having that companionship. This will be my first time raising a dog in an apartment instead of a house, so I’m a little nervous about how the adjustment will go especially with space, noise, and daily routines.

For anyone who’s done this before, what should I expect? Any tips for small-space living, building routines, or keeping a dog comfortable in an apartment?

Thanks in advance for any advice 🐾

  • Dog is territorial on walks but we live in an apartment!

I adopted my boy Charlie about 2 years ago. He's somewhere between 3-5 years old. 20lbs dachshund mix.

Back in January I moved from a house to an apartment. When taking Charlie on walks, he was initially fine but after about a month he started barking excessively if he sees (or sometimes even smells) another dog, but ONLY when we're walking around the complex.

He gets along fine with my other dog. If we go somewhere else, he doesn't bark at other dogs. He also goes to doggy day care 2 days a week and the staff always tells me what a delight he is! I can also see him on the camera and he's very clearly not aggressive or barking at the other dogs.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get him to chill out on our normal walks?

  • My dog gets way too excited when he sees other dogs on walks

I have a 1 year 3 month old dachshund. Most of the time he’s great on walks—no leash blasting, just calm sniffing. The only issue is when we run into other dogs: he gets super excited and wants to play and run around with them.

Any tips to help him stay calmer around other dogs? Right now I’m rewarding him with treats when he’s calm outside.

  • heavy-ish duty tennis ball launcher recommendations?

for my ball obsessed german shepherd

i need it to fit a normal sized tennis ball, not a mini one. im looking for an automatic throwing one, where he can just drop the ball in it

he’s a gentle dog and i dont have to worry about him breaking the machine, so im mostly looking for one that will throw it far
