  • 10 month puppy personality/behaviour changing almost daily????

My boy (whippet) is nearly 10 months and I swear he cannot make his mind up what sort of dog he wants to be.

Yesterday he was a literal angel baby. Excellent recall, calm greet of the occasional dog on our walk, settled in a cafe for me to drink a coffee etc…

I'm pretty sure a demon posessed him overnight because today he was crazaay. Hyper fixating on other dogs, playing too boisterously and ignoring social queues, whining for attention, chewing slippers when he knows he isnt allowed, jumping up…

When do you start to see more consistency in who they will be? What if he stays a demon dog forever 😂

  • A good reminder for puppies

🐾 Every breeder knows this moment, that little buzz on your phone a few days after a puppy goes home.

The message starts sweet, “we love him, but…”

And you already know what’s coming next. But he barks. But he nips. But he cries at night. But he’s just “a lot.”

And it breaks your heart a little every time, because what they’re describing isn’t a “problem.”

    It’s a puppy.

A baby learning the world outside of their mom and littermates. They’re confused, overstimulated, excited, and scared…sometimes all at once. And that’s normal.

    But people today want easy.

People want the version they see online…the one that sits calmly, never chews a shoe, and somehow knows “sit” by eight weeks.

They forget that behind every well-mannered dog is someone who put in the work, the patience, the boundaries, the grace.

People want the love without the learning curve.

Even the most beautifully raised puppies don’t come pre-programmed. They come ready to grow with you. To learn your rhythms, your tone, your energy. They don’t need perfection, they need patience.

Some people confuse an easy puppy with a good one. But the truth is, every puppy is good they’re just new. And new things are messy before they’re magical.

We comfort the ones who come back scared, unsure, wondering what they did wrong. We remind them softly, “you didn’t do anything wrong, baby.” Because it’s never their fault that someone wasn’t ready for the hard parts that make the best parts possible.

Raising a puppy isn’t instant. It’s sleepless nights, puddles on the floor, little teeth on fingers, and the sweetest bond you’ll ever build.

A puppy isn’t a project, or a phase, or something to “try.” It’s a commitment. A piece of your heart on four legs. If you’re not ready for the messy parts of puppyhood, that’s okay. Just wait until you can give your whole heart.

Because these little souls deserve nothing less 💜 🐾

  • 4.5 month old won’t go on walks with myself or my wife alone, but will with us and our daughter or trainer

If myself or my wife attempt to take the dog on a solo walk from our house, she pretty much refuses to go any further than a few houses away. She just sits down or decided she wants to return home. However, if I take my 9 year old daughter on the walk with us, the dog will happily go anywhere. We also have a trainer helping us out, and yesterday the trainer and my wife went for a walk and they went all over the neighbourhood no problem.

But on the same day, my wife attempted to go on a walk in the exact same direction, and the dog refused.

The dog is a bit fearful of unknown sounds, so I suspect that's part of it. Maybe because it's quieter because it's just one adult and there's no talking?

Has anyone seen this type of behaviour before?

  • Toy & Chew Recommendations for Boarding

We’ll be boarding our dog (retriever breed) for 11 days soon, and while she has been boarded before (up to 8 days) she doesn’t love it. She is a very intelligent and sensitive breed so I’m sure she’s board and stressed from not having as much human contact as she’s used to.

The place we take her has indoor/ outdoor run that the dog can come and go as they please during the day (they close the doggie door at bedtime) and add ons such as living room cuddles in the evening, nature walks, stuffed kongs, etc. which we do add some of this one while we’re gone to help a bit with boredom and enrichment.

What toys/ chews would you send with your pup that you feel are relatively safe for them to have while not under constant supervision? Please only recommend ones that you have direct experience with. Thank you!

  • Ticks

I live outside of Pittsburgh and the ticks here are out of control. My dog Happy has the Lyme vaccine, takes monthly flea and tick prevention, and I lint roll her with the sticky tape style lint roller before she comes in the house yet I’m still finding ticks. Anyone have other suggestions to keep the ticks out?

  • First Time Puppy Owner

I've rescued dogs before but never experienced puppyhood. I hope I'm doing this right so far and would love some critiques.

Yesterday we brought home our 8 week old girl. She was born at the shelter so she's already used to a kennel somewhat. Been taking her outside every hour to pee. She doesn't ask yet but whenever I see her sniffing I attempt outside. Had a few accidents inside throughout the day. Gave her supper around 6pm followed by potty, play, nice big drink of water around 7 and then stopped water/food for the night. Little more play, potty, cuddles and final potty break around 9:30 then bed. Someone suggested to us to put her bed/kennel elevated and close by my face so she can see us while adjusting. Every half hour this girl woke up crying. I would comfort her back to sleep the first half hour then on the hour- potty break. She peed everytime outside and I gave her praise. Finally by 1am she stayed asleep until 5:30am. I feel like this was a success for the first night here. I had expected not to sleep at all but thankful for the 4 hrs lol. She went both poo and pee 30 mins after breakfast, but then peed on my rug 10 mins later lol. Any advice if I'm doing this right or tips to improve? I really want to get this potty training right. I feel pretty confident with other behavioral training. Thank you in advance!

  • Dogs

Six weeks ago we adopted a dog from a foster situation. He is an almost four year old 70% miniature poodle. The vet believes he is also part Lhasa Apso. He is the perfect new pet for my wife and I who are in our early 70’s. He’s potty trained. He never asks to go outside. We just take him out every three hours or so and he does his thing. He is the perfect lap dog. He sleeps all evening, goes out between 10-11 PM, then sleeps 8-9 hours through the night. What we know about his past is puppy mill, fostered, adopted by a 21 year old woman who only kept him for a month, fostered and now with us. He doesn’t yap. He only barks when frightened. After six weeks he’s attached to my wife. Slow to respond to requests and commands. He is very sedate almost chomotose 😂. He gets frisky for a couple of minutes a couple times a day. Are these dog typically low energy or does his past predicate his present? Any thoughts?
