  • My dog is extremely destructive, and I’m at a total loss.

My dog is about 1.5 years old. She is a mixed breed, but the majority breeds are 28% husky and 19% German Shepherd.

She truly is a chewer. It used to be all the time regardless of if I was around or not, we thankfully trained her not to do it. As long as we are present she won’t chew. She has chewed through cords that are plugged in, plates, towels, blankets, clothes, and even a glass straw. The most recent victim, my brand new couch that I worked so hard to buy. By some miracle she hasn’t hurt herself yet.

    Things you need to know

She gets a kong to chew on and for mental stimulation. She gets long walks and lots of playtime. She is fed from a slow feeder for more mental stimulation. She has another dog to play with while we are at work.

My dog is crate trained, as long as I am present. We worked very hard to get to that point. If I am not around she will shake, chew, and claw at her crate until she’s breaks it to get out. If she doesn’t do that she howls and barks (which can’t happen because we live in an apartment). That is why crating really isn’t an option.

She knows several commands. Our main form of training is positive reinforcement.

  • Potty training and water intake

We got our 9 week old bernedoodle puppy this past weekend and when we were picking him up they mentioned he loves water and drank some of his bath water. We made frequent stops the whole way home and he peed once. We were hesitant about giving him too much water but learned from the vet the following day not to restrict. Fast forward to today he’s had close to 2 cups of water and we’re peeing a few times outside every 10-15 minutes awake. If he naps, the moment he wakes up he pees before I can grab him and run him outside. Is this normal? From what I read it seems so, but is there anyway to space out the bathroom breaks? I work remotely but I cant be taking breaks as much as we have. Follow up question, is it better to just fill up the whole bowl at the beginning of the day or give small refills throughout? I’ve been refilling 1/3-1/2 c throughout the day but trying to see if there’s other ways to manage the pee madness.

    Thank you for your help!

  • In the thick of it with naps

My 8-month-old puppy has been a champion sleeper since day 1. She's been crate trained since we got her at 8 weeks. Her crate is a happy place for her. Two to three naps a day and she sleeps at least 12 hours straight through at night. Today, however, she won't stay asleep for me. She's not sick, injured, bored or overtired, and she doesn't have unmet needs. I do ALL the things for her. She goes in crate, let's me cover her with her blanket, I sit with her for a bit, then close the door super quietly and leave the room. I have white and brown noise playing. The house is quiet. But today, she wakes up every single time I try to leave. I tried three or four times to get her down for a nap so far. Is this adolescence? Separation anxiety related to adolescence? Any tips on what to do? I don't want to just let her cry, but I don't want to reinforce the whining if I leave her. If I were to sit on the couch with her she would sleep on my lap. It's like she's sleeping with one eye open waiting to hear me leave. TIA.

  • Advise on puppy socialization

Mavis is 12 weeks old and the vet highly recommended dog training classes for her not only for of course training but socializing ASAP! She said it is crucial for a German to get the proper socialization and I should do it now the younger the better. But my issue is she doesn’t have her rabies shot yet (won’t until December 5th) and the trainers near me require it to register her in a class with other dogs. How can I work on socializing her with other dogs that’s not dangerous? I’ve seen so many things about dog parks being bad for dogs and introducing dogs on a leash can be bad or cause reactivity and I’m unsure where to go from here. Thank you!

  • Any tips on bath time?

I have a 7 month old beagle and she’s good with most things, but giving her baths is an absolute nightmare. I don’t bathe her often, probably once a month at MOST, but she likes to freak out and claw at me and try to jump out of the tub whenever I try to. I tried smearing a little peanut butter on the wall and that worked really well a couple times but now it doesn’t work at all, she’ll lick it when I first put her in the tub and then completely ignore it and try to jump out when I start washing her. I’ve also tried giving her a little plain chicken but that didn’t work too well either. I’m honestly just at a loss for what to do, I don’t want to keep getting scratched up every time a bathe her, and I wanna try and make it less stressful for her as well. Any help is greatly appreciated, I would like to get this figured out!

  • To rehome 4 year old Newfie or bring her back home to hot weather with me?

I have to leave Canada and move back to the Philippines. I'm happy and able to do everything I can to make it comfy for my dog but even if it's feasible, it doesn't always mean it'll be the healthiest or most comfortable as the climate is such a stark difference.

The temperature is 95-120F (35-50C) year round in the Philippines. The lowest it gets is 77F but the environment has gotten hotter in recent years. Climate is only ever sun or rain, with rainy season still at 77-80s from what I remember and what family has told me.

I really do want to give this some thought because she grew up with all 4 seasons in Canada, swimming in glacier lakes and rivers or the cold ocean, and it's a choice between her being separated from me forever or being in the heat forever.

If I bring her to the Philippines, I will be in the capital which is a bigger city than any place she has ever lived in and with less access to nature. The plan is to provide her with AC all day in one to two rooms, a kiddie pool, walk her early mornings (4-5am) and late evenings, do mental stimulation 1-2x per day, and provide weekly swims through indoor dog pools. I think the beaches would be too hot for her and even then, would need a 3-4 hour drive.

I asked in a Newfie group on Facebook and everyone said to keep her because it'll be harder for them to lose family. At the same time, those who have suggested that I bring her as their Newfies live with them in hot states still have that reprieve of cooler seasons.

I understand it's sad to lose each other but she's my soul dog and I would rather she has the best life and I don't want to assume that that automatically means it's with me. I've been having a hard time with this decision because she's my everything but I don't want to be selfish and I want what's best for her.

Does anyone have advice or thoughts?
