  • Is this separation anxiety or FOMO? How do you tell the actual difference, because they seem the same to me.

I puppy sat today and this is an almost 2 year old dog. She does have separation anxiety but I was told it was mild and being worked on. There was never really a time where I just left her alone for a long time, and I did frequent 1:1‘s with all the dogs as best as I could.

    1. She peed and pooped in the house, specifically the room she was in.

    2. She corrected my puppy once, no nipping just a squee and during a time I did a “test” to see what she was doing after she did this he sat in a corner and she pawed and cried very loudly at the baby gate for 5 minutes (I kept them separate after this). Thankfully he started napping. I watched from the window.

    3. She attempted to destroy one of my kennels.

    4. She attempted to destroy a rug I have that is outside the baby gate(idk how tf she pulled it through).

    5. She banged against the gate a few times with her front paws

    6. I heard her screaming from outside the house during potty breaks with my puppy and older dog.

These behaviors only stopped when I was present. I went to my room to change into my jammies and she went nuts. I come back and she is sweet as can be. I feel like the last time she was here, she maybe did a couple a whines when alone but then again someone was always somewhere in the house. I had chores to do today where I could not devote all my waking time to her, and my puppy and older dog are always fine when I have to do things alone so long as they can see each other. My friend said this is more FOMO than anxiety and that she never does this at their house, but just last month she told me about a incident where the dog was alone and she tore up papers on her kitchen table.

  • Leash training – PLEASE HELP

Hi everyone. This is my first post here as I have been nervous about getting chewed out, just an anxiety thing, but I desperately need help. I got my puppy 3 weeks ago. She came from a breeder (i know) and was pretty calm the first few days. She has definitely made progress since being with me, she trains quickly. The issue I am having right now is leash training. She will walk with me on leash with no issue, but the moment we get outside it is an absolute nightmare. She pulls trying to get out of her harness, whines and barks the whole time, stops and lays down until I come and stand her back up, attacks my ankles, and just overall does not get it. She is very good about going potty outside, but does not allow me to reward when she goes. She completely ignores me and the treats, won’t recall when I call her name or “come” (she knows that one), and just tries to run off. So I guess my question now is, what am I doing wrong? We live in a pretty populated area by the water and I think part of the issue may be the commotion outside overwhelming her, but how do we get past that? I want her to be able to feel comfortable on leash outside. She seems to be interested in going out, so how do I make it an enjoyable experience for both her and I?

  • When did your senior dog warm up to your new puppy?

My dog will be 8 this coming year. She is very energetic and playful, goes to daycare at least once a month and always has puppy play dates. We just got another 8 week old golden retriever and the puppy loves my older dog, but my older dog wants nothing to do with her. Tonight she started growling and showing teeth when the puppy walked close to her while she was laying down. I reprimanded the older dog and separated them. After that when the puppy would get a little close to the older dog you could just tell she was uncomfortable and I would keep separating them because I didn’t want to risk anything happening. Will she ever warm up to her? I’m hoping it’s just because she’s so little right now but it really worries me.

  • Anyone worked with behaviorists for separation anxiety?

What was your experience? I’m at my wit’s end with my just over six month old pup. Got him at four months and have tried EVERYTHING but he has no tolerance to build upon despite working on this every day for two months. Sometimes he’s okay for a few seconds or even thirty and then days like today he flips out before I even get to the door.

Not asking for separation anxiety tips (I have read/tried everything, yes he has everything he needs/tired out/stuff to entertain himself/etc.) but for experiences with behaviorists specifically. It’s a lot of money if they’re just gonna recommend Naismith or Overall. Or if two months is too short of a time to expect progress I guess that’s helpful to know but in a couple months he will HAVE to learn to exist on his own when I go back to the office.

I hate that he’s so stressed out which of course then stresses me out.

  • Crate training help!

Hello! My husband and I adopted our Dalmatian puppy at 9 weeks. We didn’t crate train her from the start — our fault, yes, we know — and are trying to crate train her now at 9 months. We are just crating her when we leave the house, not overnight.

She eats meals in her crate and is fine. We put her in for 10 minutes a day and up to 30 minutes a day while we are home. She whines a bit but she is fine.

We left the house for the first time with her in the crate and she screamed the entire few hours we were gone. We left again today and she did the same thing. She kicks the crate and moves it all over the living room. We’ve tried giving her calming gummies and they do absolutely nothing.

I truly don’t know what to do. I’m really hoping she will get used to it and this is just a phase but I’m worried it won’t get better. Is this the best way to crate train her? Please leave any tips. Thank you!!

  • I had a dog about eight years ago, and after it passed away, I haven’t had another one since. If I were to get a dog now, what breed do you think would be the best choice?

I usually travel a lot or take walks along the beach, and I think that’s a really good thing. But of course, some dogs are afraid of the water. My job also requires me to travel to other countries from time to time, but even so, I still have plenty of time to be with my dog

  • Apartment living & Potty Training

We have a 5 1/2 month puppy, and i’m having a bit of trouble potty training her. When I take her outside, she doesn’t always go, and about 5-10minutes later will do her business inside. It is getting better, but I do get frustrated (I don’t punish her). She gets easily distracted with people and noise.

We have a senior dog, and even though we’ve had puppies before, it’s definitely different being in an apartment than a house with a yard.

Any tips? Is it normal that she’s still struggling? Does it get better😭
