Moving to Crate for Sleeping
Hey! For those of you crate training, what do you do when your puppy falls asleep outside of the crate or is showing signs of being very sleepy but curling up somewhere else?
The goal is for my puppy to WANT to sleep in her crate and go there naturally when she’s tired, so I want to encourage her sleeping in there, but I don’t want it to be a forced thing. When I do intentionally put her in there to sleep, she goes to sleep fine.

I’m getting a new puppy tomorrow. Any tips for the first few days?
We’re picking up our new puppy tomorrow evening. It’s the first time we’ve had a young puppy for about 13 years. Anyone got any tips to help us get her settled in quickly and for helping with introducing her with our current older boy?

How to socialize a puppy before they finish vaccines?
I will be getting a new puppy in December and I’d like some advice about how to get in safe socialization while the pup is still too young to have all their vaccines. I know those weeks before they can be fully vaccinated are crucial to introducing them to new experiences and socializing but I’m also a bit terrified of the pup picking up parvo from somewhere. I’ve read parvo horror stories on here about it being picked up on shoes or still alive in the soil in the yard for years and it’s making me anxious about taking the pup anywhere until they get their vaccines. But I also don’t want to set the puppy up for failure by neglecting their exposure to new people and places. What’s the balance of being safe and still getting in that crucial socialization?
Also I’ll be driving about 9 hours to pick up the pup and any advice on safe pit stops to let the pup potty and run off some energy would be greatly appreciated.

The best boy…until we leave
Our boy is 13 weeks old and is so well behaved, 90% house trained, loves to play, and understands no pretty well. We've had him for a week now.
Initially we had his crate in the family room since that's where we spent most of our time but this resulted in lots of wake up's during the night. We've been crate training and doing the 2:1 in/out which has helped a lot. We moved his crate into our room at night and now he sleeps/rests for 6-8 hours at a time and will just wake us up if he needs to go potty.
We left him home alone for 2 hours in his crate yesterday and he had no accidents, but we didn't know how he behaved. Today, he will be home alone in his crate intermittently with the goal to be 3-4 hours at a time (we both work full time so this is the most realistic thing right now). I decided to leave our iPad on FaceTime so I could hear if/how he settled but the barking was incessant. He was fine when I left and was relaxed but 30 minutes later he started to bark. And now almost an hour later he's still barking. He finds a toy and squeaks it once or twice, then the barking resumes. He'll find something to chew, then the barking.
I know dogs bark/howl, but I'm mostly concerned for our neighbors and his separation anxiety. We live in a townhouse with one shared wall neighbor. I feel so bad that he's so loud but I don't think there's much I can do about it? He's pretty much fine when we leave the room at home, a couple whines and barks but nothing like this. Am I scaring my puppy?
I know it's very helicopter parent of me to leave the phone on FaceTime, but I feel like I won't know how to help him unless I know how much/when he's barking? Anyone else struggle with this? Do we just let him bark it out and give our neighbors a Starbucks card and an apology note?😂

Puppy doesnt walk to go on his walk anymore
15 week Golden Retriever. Doesnt matter what I do. Treats, low value, high value. Usual training prompts from trainer. Day time or when its dark. Always used to heel well on our 10 minute walk.
Perfectly happy running up and down inside so no injury concern. He will just stop and refuse to walk, trying to pull me back to the house. Even the squeezy cheese isnt working urgh.
Anyone had this? What to do?

Nuances in potty training
Consider these Level 2 or Level 3 potty training questions. I have the basics down (I think).
I have had my Great Pyr pup (now 11 months) for over 7 months. Things I do currently. 1. Crate training. 2. Tethering or small area space when inside. 3. Frequently take her outside and reward for poop/pee.
Side note – she is still not potty trained, will poop/ pee inside. Different areas of the house (ie not just one spot). This happens when she accidentally gets a moment of freedom from the above practices. (Ie I get distracted and she has 5 minutes free in the house)
I am frustrated by this lack of progress but This is not what I am asking about. This thread has been so useful in getting me squared away in the basics.
My questions:
-. I am so desperate for her to go outside I haven’t focused so much on the “where” she goes outside. She seems to love to poop and pee on my travertine deck instead of the (plentiful) grass/mulch. I would love to transition her to the grass but she is really weird about the potty thing and if I try to guide her to an area she refuses to go at all. She won’t go unless she is off leash and can go where she wants. How can I get her move to grass? She’s incredibly stubborn on this topic. (I do walk her every morning and she is fine pottying on leash when we are walking but in backyard – no way)
- I have a dog door which she is completely comfortable with. When she is confined or tethered she will signal to go out. I rush her to the dog door and out she goes no problem. But then she just stands there waiting for me to go out the human door and join her. If I don’t go out she just stands there and won’t potty. I assume this could be to ensure she gets a treat but I would like to encourage her to go outside and do her business without being accompanied. Will this eventually happen on its own? Are there steps I can take to get her to start behaving independently?
Thank you so much in advance. I did check the history but didn’t see anything quite like my specific questions.
