  • Puppy routine and independence training

Hi everyone, I’d love some guidance on routine and early independence training.

I’ve read similar topics but still feel unsure, and I’m worried that our current routine might lead to separation issues. My puppy is a 16-week-old Whippet (a breed already prone to separation anxiety), and I want to set her up well.

She sleeps and naps in her crate without any whining, so that part is working great. The challenge is everything outside of sleep: she is with me all the time. I take her to work, she free-roams at home, and we go for walks together. Because of that, I don’t really know what a healthy daily structure should look like.

I’d really appreciate advice on two things:

    1. What should a balanced daily routine look like?

    • How much time should I spend on training sessions per day at this age?
    • How much active play together is ideal?
    • And how much time should she spend entertaining herself (chews, toys, sniffing, etc.)?

    2. How to start leaving her alone?

This is the biggest uncertainty for me.

Should I begin leaving the house when she’s asleep in the crate and just gradually increase the duration?

Or should I only leave when she’s awake?

How much exercise or mental stimulation should she get before I leave her alone?

Any tips, step-by-step routines, or examples of what works for your puppies would be super helpful.

    Thanks so much!

  • Having trouble potty training my puppy.

This is my first dog that I need to train as an adult, so I'm pretty lost. My puppy is about 2 months old (I got him about 2 weeks ago from a friend) and I've got him mostly trained to pee outside with treats and reaffirming, but he's only ever pooped outside once. I take him out regularly and let him have plenty of time outside and I make sure to give him plenty of treats and love when he does go outside, but he still only poops indoors. When he does go inside I put him in time out in his cage for about 30 mins. I'm beginning to worry that this approach is only making him think pooping is bad in general and see the cage as bad rather than a safe space I'd like him to think it is.

Any advice from those more experienced would be greatly appreciated.

  • I feel horrible. Truly awful. I shouted at my puppy

So I have a 7 month GSD. He’s lovely. His tempremant is to die for. He learns so quickly and he’s so loving.

Normally he will sleep at my feet whilst I’m working and we have gotten into a really good rhythm. I adore him.

We play, we walk I take him everywhere with me ( gotta keep up that socialisation and desensitisation).

I have had him since 10 weeks.

Anyway this evening I shouted at him. He didn’t particularly do anything wrong. Other than not settling. I was sat on the sofa after I had just finished work. It’s particularly busy with work right now and relentless and he just wanted a fuss. He does this thing where he nibbles my sleeves with his front teeth. We are redirecting and telling him ah ah. He does not respond to no every time he does this.

However this time he wouldn’t. I did the usual lay down. Which I get him to do every time when I am sat on my end of the sofa and we have just 5-10 mins of snuggles, cuddles and Huggles to just breath. It relaxes me.

But he would just not settle I ended up shouting lay down at him and he just looked at me with the most puppy dog eyes going and laid down and now I am just crying.

I feel truly terrible. I know with puppyhood it’s very upset and downs and ebbs and flows but I feel truly terrible.

Am I a terrible puppy mum. I love my fur babies but I dunno if I was just overstimulated from a stresful day. Or just what.

I would like to state I am Audhd and sometimes I do just get completely wound tight and can get snippety but never with my fur baby.

  • How to handle puppy barking/whining with toddler

I had a dog previously that lived to almost 12 so I'm not totally inexperienced but I just got a puppy and this is my first time navigating puppyhood with an infant/ toddler. We have the puppy confined to the kitchen with a gate and he sleeps there and spends a lot of the time there to keep him separate from my toddler, he does get lots of walks and time in our big back yard. However sometimes he is demand barking or whining for company while my toddler is napping or sleeping at night and I don't want to wake up my son but I also don't want to teach my puppy that barking and loud whining/ howling is effective. Any toddler/pet parents have tips for dealing with this? I do have a sound machine that I turn up when the barking starts but when it is very loud or continues for several minutes it makes me so anxious I feel I have to intervene before a nap gets ruined. I did try crate training and we are working on it but he was left at a gas station in a box at 3 weeks old so he was not with his mom and then spent time in a shelter so I think his crate fear may come from that. He will go into the crate to get a high value treat but is shaking the entire time he does it. I do have a plastic crate as I flew with my previous dog so I am open to trying a metal crate if that is the solution to this lol.

  • 10 week old holding it all night

Our Luna (English Springer Spaniel) is 10 weeks tomorrow, we’ve had her since 8 weeks, and for the last 2 nights she hasn’t woken us once for toilet trips (10pm – 6am). She hasn’t had an accident since she was 8.5 weeks either, day or night.

She sleeps in a closed crate in the lounge, room doors open. We had set alarms for the first few nights to check on her, but we soon learned she would cry if she needed to go (and we take her out for a short boring loo trip as soon as we hear her).

Bedtime routine is quite strong now so she’s usually going to bed empty, and we will wake her for a ~9:55pm trip if she’s already sleeping.

Not seeking advice really, just surprised that she can hold it comfortably all night at this age and wanted to share a positive story.

Perhaps it’s thanks to our approach and structure… and all the advice we read on r/puppy101 before getting her of course!

I like to think she trusts she can go out when she needs to, so doesn’t stress and sleeps more soundly as a result.

  • Need advice please – training for being alone/without me

Hi everyone! My puppy is 12 weeks old now. We started the training for being alone (The goal at some point should be that she can stay alone for a maximum of 4 hours).. At the same time, we do crate-training. So while I am leaving, she is staying in her „fence“ (I dont know the english word sorry. Its a fence, and in her area, she has water/food, toys abd her dog bed). Acutally, she can sleep in her crate/fence while im in the same room. But as soon as I leave, she starts to whine, yelp and bark. She is really under a lot of stress and is panting heavily when I get back. I never left longer than 10 minutes.

Is this normal? Did I start the training to early? Should I go on? Will it get better?

  • Calling all dog lovers

I’ve never used Reddit before, but figured I would give it a shot and enlist your help. I have been on the lookout for the Large Lil Roamers Elephant Dog Toy and can’t find it anywhere in the U.S. Best I could do was a lovely shop in New Zealand, but it would cost me $70 which I just don’t have at this time (original price was $17, but the $70 would be with shipping from NZ). I was hoping maybe someone, some dog store might have one around.

The reason I ask is the Lil' Roamers – Elephant has been my pup Ollie's favorite toy since he was 7 weeks old. He carries it to bed every night and is definitely a comfort to him. I have had to replace one or two over the years due to the rubber drying out, but unfortunately they are no longer available in the states (or at least I have not been able to find one) and his latest has been drying up and may not last much longer. I would be thrilled to find even one as he turns ten this year and just want the old boy to have his favorite toy/buddy.

Believe me I have tried other toys but I think my gentle giant thinks of it as his baby. If you know of where I can get one I would appreciate it.
