  • Dog anxious from work laptop

Hello, so my dog has started to get very anxious when I'm on my work laptop. For some reason my personal laptop doesn't create the same issue for her, and I'm wondering if there's any strategies people have used to reduce the high frequency noise from their laptops or chargers? I work from home a lot and need to be on calls pretty regularly. She'll hide under the bed or in the bathroom and it's starting to cause me some stress. If it's the power cord, are there covers that have been shown to help?

  • Overstimulated 7-month-old Cavalier – need advice šŸ™

    Overstimulated 7-month-old Cavalier - need advice šŸ™

I brought home a 7-month-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She grew up in a pack of adult Cavaliers, and her breeder only trained her for dog shows (stand and walk). She walked calmly on a leash there, didn’t pull, and didn’t react to anything. She lived other 5 adult Cavaliers, so I think she never had a reason to look for excitement?

Now we live on Long Island, with deer, squirrels, raccoons, birds, and all kinds of strong scents and movement everywhere. She has been here with me for about a month, and honestly the last two weeks have gotten worse instead of better.

Inside the house she barks at random noises, shadows, footsteps upstairs, and anything out the window. When she gets into this alert state, she won’t listen at all. She also whines when she can’t get to something she wants, or when she’s overstimulated.

She used to be calm and focused the first two weeks, but now it feels like her brain switches off and she just reacts to everything (over-excitement not aggresive)

I’m also trying introducing her slowly to our two new kittens. She gets extremely overstimulated by their smell and goes into ā€œsearch mode,ā€ whining and pacing.

    What i need advice on:

How do I de-escalate an overstimulated dog in the moment when she’s not listening to anything?

Leash pulling to get to other dogs/people/whatever scent she caught and goes into ā€œsearch mode,ā€ whining and pacing.

How do I teach recall, calmness, and focus when the environment is full of wildlife and distractions?

Should I keep her on a leash in the yard until she’s fully trained? Or is it better to let her run and burn off energy even if she ignores me? Bcs on a yard she immediate locks in and is obsessed, chasing birds…

How do I limit the barking/reactivity toward noises, windows, and movement?

    I'd appreciate any thoughts/advice, tysm šŸ™

P.S Video is just a mild version of her reactivity, but wanted to caught it on video.

  • how much of this is just an adjustment period?

My husband and I have a friend’s dog who is with us on a temporary long term basis. We’ve known her for years, she is 5yo and well trained, very sweet. She has been with us for 3 weeks now. She has begun exhibiting behaviors our friend hasn’t seen before, especially resource guarding. She only guards against other dogs, NOT any humans. The thing is, sometimes there is no discernible trigger. All food and toys are removed, everyone receiving affection, etc. She seems on edge and it makes me anxious as I have a 10 month old baby. Luckily, when there are no other dogs in the house she does NOT exhibit these guarding behaviors! My question is, how much of this is an adjustment period and her becoming comfortable in our home? Should we expect it to continue? We have a couple friends whose dogs have separation anxiety so they are accustomed to bringing them over. For the time being, we’ll ask them not to. If we want to think about allowing it again, is there any chance that it could be okay? I’ve read the wiki’s on resource guarding and dominance which seem to be mostly about dog/human interactions, which this girl doesn’t have a problem with.

  • Best cleaner for removing pet and human urine odor?

My pup had been "wetting" and my neighbor (trainer) had suggested to deter the behavior by immediately wetting on any new markings to assert dominance.

We've seen some improvement, but it's had the obvious side effect of lingering odors which I want to eliminate before family visits for the upcoming holiday.

Is there a recommended cleaner for removing both pet AND human urine odor? I was going to try Bissell Pet Stain & Odor formula, but it looks like it's formulated for just dogs and cats.

    Thanks!

  • Neutralization/Desensitization Clarity

    Hello!

I’ve been reading the wiki & working on neutralizing my 9month year old dog to other dogs on walks. He isn’t aggressive, but he’s overly excited/ ā€œfrustrated greaterā€.

I’m having trouble figuring out the instruction of ā€œpraise when calmā€, as he sometimes will sit and lock in on another dog but not bark/cry.

During these times, he won’t respond to treats so I understand that I need to move him further away from the trigger, but does this type of looking behavior count as being calm? I’m confused on when to treat for not barking/pulling vs treating for disengaging/focusing on me.

  • Help potty training me 11mo dog.

I have a Shih Tzu who seems to only mark outside, never ā€œfullyā€ pee. I take him out four times a day but sometimes he will ā€œfullyā€ pee inside. It often happens when I’m at work but I don’t want to leave him in his crate all day (right now he’s in the crate in the morning, I come home and take him outside during lunch, and then I leave him outside of the crate). I reward him every time he pees outside, even if it’s marking – is this the wrong thing to do?? Please help!

  • What should I know before getting a dog?

Backround info – I'm twenty and only really had cats before, but have dogs at for my sibling. I'm also Agoraphobic w/severe Social anxiety/general anxiety, but have felt better when I'm walking a dog [planning on dogsitting my sisters dog mpre often to see how I do] and I'm not willing to live alone without a dog for protection so I've been thinking about getting a German Shepard. I have twoish cats, ones just out of kittenhood and the other is like seven years old, the other is 18 who we cat sit for my aunt.

I don't really know what I need to know to be able to care for/own a dog so if you anyone can help me out with what I should learn/what sites to use/things to know for getting a dog that would be very helpful. I'm planning on doing a bunch of research and want to keep a long tllist of everything I've looked into.

    Thanks in advance!
