  • Tips on reactive puppy in apartment

Hey everyone, I posted this on r/goldenretrievers so I hope its okay I post it here too because I'm really looking for some advice.

We just got a puppy a few weeks ago, shes 11 weeks old and doing great. She's adjusted well and is learning our routine but still has SO much to learn in terms of training. I want her to be a great dog but at this stage in her life she gets excited by everything.

I'm currently in an apartment over 10 floors up. I don't intend to live here forever but there's tons of green space and we walk all the time. The problem is, we live in a building with lots of other dogs and people constantly using the elevator, and she has to go out all the time during her potty training phase.

I train her often, but she is still so young and has such a small attention span. I want her to be non-reactive when other people step in the elevator (or even worse, other dogs) but it just seems hopeless because it's so much stimulation for her all at once and she forgets I exist. I have to get on my knees and hold her back so she doesn't try to play with everyone she meets.

Is there any any way I can work on this with her? She already knows a lot of tricks so she is good with simple training, but these situations just feel so uncontrolled and I don't want her to develop bad habits. Or, do I just have to deal with these encounters and wait until she's a little older to start reinforcing non-reactivity with her?

Thank you all for the advice.

  • When does it get better?

I know there are many of these posts. I am really struggling. When does it get better?

My puppy just turned 7 months and although lots of things are going really well. He has started meerkating on walks when he sees another dog and is still very hyperactive in the house, if I sit down he will often jump and try and nip me and the rug.

I just want to know when he’ll be more chill in the house, I work from home and am going slightly insane with the constant management.

  • this might be a silly question …

howdy y’all! we have a BC mix baby that’s about 7 months now. she’s obviously never seen christmas trees or decorations and is def an investigator/klepto when she gets bored, so i’m wondering how other high-energy puppy parents have handled putting up their new and exciting decorations?

i’m not sure if i should crate her until i’m done or hae her out while i’m doing them. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • Puppy pulls on leash no matter what I do

Hello! So I have a 7 month old doxie, he's usually such a chill puppy when it's just the two of us but when he's outside he turns into a tiny monster that stops listening to anything.

My worst problem is leash pulling, he does it constantly and it's horrible especially when I am at a crossing and he pulls in every direction and is in everyone's feet.

I've tried: working on heel, when we are outside treats are almost nonexistent for him even though he's a big foodie.

Stopping when he pulls and only advancing when there's a loose leash. He stops with me, waits for me to walk and continues pulling. He has no problem waiting but it doesn't seem to click that I want the loose leash.

I also tried moving backwards when he is pulling but it's the same. He comes with me where I go to but the moment I move forward he pulls again. When he pulls like a maniac and I can't even reason with him and I feel frustrated I just stop the walk.

I'm at my wits end 🙁 Is it something that improves with months of repetition or with age? I've been doing this for the last couple of months and I almost never go forward when he pulls, unless we have somewhere to be and I can't afford to keep stopping or walking him back home.

  • Puppy isn’t finishing meals/gets distracted

Hi everyone, last week I brought home a 15 week old Shiba Inu puppy. Hes doing great so far but I am having some trouble getting him to be interested in his food. I was given a large bag of Health Extension little bites food along with a few cans of the same brand and was told that was what he was already eating. I currently give him 1/4 cup of the kibble with 1/4 cup of the wet food and I add in hot water to warm up the wet food thats been in the fridge. He gets this 2x a day plus I leave him in his play pen with a 1/2 cup of the plain kibble while Im at work (Im super worried about hypoglycema). By the time I get home from work he has eaten most of the kibble throughout the day however morning and night when I feed his "big" meals he will only eat part of it then get distracted and refuse to finish it even when redirected back to his bowl. How can I get him to settle and eat? Ive already reduced the portion I was giving him after assuming I was giving him too much but he still wont finish it. I also wanted to ask about the food brand as well because I was under the impression that grain free dog food has been linked to heart disease? Is there something thats better I can slowly switch him to? I'd like to add that I do prefer not to order his food online if possible if thats something worth noting. Thank you all so much in advance Im already learning so much on this subreddit!

  • Megathread: Why Does My Dog Do That?

Does your dog turn his head when he hears an odd noise? Does your dog bury their food with your pants? This is the thread to ask why.

  • 6 month old puppy eating considerably less

I have a 6 month old bouvier puppy, who until about 5.5 months ate normally. Dry kibble, wet kibble, didn’t matter he would eat it. Lately, he’s started eating considerably less, maybe a quarter or half of his breakfast and half or three quarters of his dinner, even with toppers like plain Greek yogurt or canned wet food. He’s in good health, and the vet said his body composition looks good for now. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this with puppies?? I’m concerned he’s not getting enough calories…
