  • My puppy cries non stop when I leave

I have a 9 week female cavapoo puppy for 2 days. She will not stop crying when she is in the pen until someone goes back to her. Her setup is a crate inside a playpen. I know that she is still settling, but is there any way I can try to stop this behavior? We ignore it as long as we can, but she just doesn't stop! Any help please? Thanks

  • Transition from covered to uncovered crate?

My girl (14 wk weimaraner) is pretty good at her crate naps. Since a few days she will easily nap for two hours at least, without fussing. She has a crate in the living room, at my work and in our bedroom. All are covered, though the one in our bedroom just has a little blanket while the other two can be fully covered with covers I made myself (I'm a tailor, it was a fun side project). She will even settle back down fairly easily if she gets disturbed during her nap. All of this only applies to the covered crates though. As soon as she can see what's going on she gets very restless which can escalate to loud yelping and panicked behaviour.

I think it would be good for her to be more relaxed in a crate, even when it's not covered, but I'm not sure if I should make that transition since she's sooo good in her crates now and I don't want to lose that.

I'd appreciate input and advice from other puppy parents 🙂

  • Advice for socializing my yorkie/shih tzu

I have a 7 month old yorkie/shih tzu mix. She is doing great with her general training (sit, down, place, stay), as well as her potty training. She also is now only in her crate when no one is home and all she does is sleep.

She also is finally not scared to go for a walk outside of our yard anymore

My biggest issue right now is how she acts around other dogs. Even if the other dog has zero aggression and is ignoring her.

I really want her to stop reacting to dogs so we can take her with us to more places.

We do have a dog park nearby but when we go there are no dogs inside its fence.

I know i need to do better with bringing toys and high value treats so when there is a dog distraction I can help distract her to show her that dog wont bother her.

Anyone have any other advice to help her get over it?

  • Dog Mom Guilt for Going to Work

I currently am raising my first solo dog who is a 10 month old chocolate lab. He’s incredible, and he does so well normally with our routine. I leave for work at 7 and he either goes to daycare (twice a week) or my mom comes and hangs with him for an hour at 11 and I get home at 3:30.

Every single day I wish I had a wfh job so I could stay with him, and this morning he really drove a stake through my heart because he did not want to go in his crate and he got so upset when I started to put my shoes on to leave. I could tell he wanted me to stay, and it really broke my heart. I feel like I do so much to make up for the long days of being alone but at the same time it has to be so hard for him. I can’t help but feel guilty even though I need to work so we can not be homeless, I just wish he could understand that😩

  • Toilet Training Timeline

How long is too long for it to take? Trying to gauge if I'm on track or not.

Had puppy about a week and a half. She is 13 weeks old. Yet to go a day without an accident.

She seems to have got the grasp of pooping outside. Been 4-5 days she she last went in her play pen.

However she will pee outside about 80% of the times but the other 20% she just goes inside her pen.

The thing is she doesn't let us know about needing to go really. Most of the time she goes outside because we watch her.

If she is in the pen she tells us rarely. In the crate she tells us the majority of the time. Her accidents tend to be in the pen but there been a few in the crate.

Is this normal? Is she on track to learn or should she have had some accident free days by now?

  • Lip licking and whale eyes while petting

So I know that the lip licking can be appeasement and doesn’t always mean stress, but I’ve not heard the same for whale eyes. My old man, Duke, has always done this. Anytime anyone pets him it’s immediate lip licking and whale eyes, but if you stop and try to give him space he’ll immediately try to get you to keep petting, sometimes even following your hand as you’re trying to pull away. In fact, once you start petting, the only way to get him to stop begging for attention is either telling him to go to his spot or putting food in front of him.

I figured this might be a weird quirk with my dog but now it’s late at night so I’m curious and I can’t find similar situations online. Any ideas from people who know more about dog behavior?

Ps I wasn’t sure what flair to put.

  • Differences between Podencos and Pharao hounds? Is there a genetic test that can detect a podenco/pharaohound mix?

I am just asking because my family has a dog who could be a podenco/pharaohound mix or just a unusual podenco. She is a rescue from Spain and the rescue organisation told us she is a podenco but after having her for a few years and meeting a lot of podencos she has some features that are more fitting for a pharaohound then for a podenco.

Btw podenco is used here a sort of standin for all regional types. We cannot determine which of the podenco types she has in her due to hunters there not avoiding crossbreeding if it produces a better hunting dog.

  • Italian bloodhound pinscher mix

We're adopting a one year old female of the above mix from the shelter, she is arriving at our home tomorrow afternoon. We have already met her to make sure she isn't reactive with kids as we have a 5 year old and although the little dog is quite timid they got on fine. I've always had cocker spaniels aside from my last dog who was a Belgian malinois cross, and I'm wondering if there's anything in particular to expect from this mix? Anything to be aware of in terms of health issues to look out for, Activity levels etc? We are a very active family, lots of walking, running, hiking etc so a higher energy dog isn't an issue generally.
