  • Small breed puppy attacks big breed dog?

    Hi!

We have a 6 month old chuweenie puppy who is usually a kissy sweetheart with exception to how he treats our bigger dog, Lazlo.

He is around other dogs that are not big and doesn't attack them outside of just playful behavior. Lazlo is the exception – puppy is very resource guard-y and literally attacks him, sometimes without any apparent resources.

It is really annoying because Lazlo is a boxer so he is big, but he is usually not doing anything wrong and just being alive when he is attacked by the small one.

I am struggling with how to train my small dog to stop attacking the big one, especially since I'm afraid what may happen if the big one loses patience. We try to just keep them separated but it makes it hard since they have to then share time outside of a crate.

Is there any way to train this behavior out of the small dog?

  • 50 hours in to having a puppy and Im scared

Is it normal to feel so scared and responsible at the beginning of having a puppy. This is my first puppy, after having a few family dogs at my parents, while I was growing up.

Im just so scared about traumatising her in the crate by leaving for too long( she absoluttly hated the crate when I fist put her in overnight, or damaging her confidence by saying no to too many things (lots of chewing already). But i really do love her and I am getting used to the lifestyle already BUT oh my god I am anxious. When does it get better and tips for improving my feelings.

Does your dog turn his head when he hears an odd noise? Does your dog bury their food with your pants? This is the thread to ask why.

  • Megathread: Pet Insurance

Which pet insurance is best for you? Are there any that may cover your dog's current treatment? Did your dog get injured during the waiting period and want to know if you're covered?

    Here's the place to ask.

Do know we cannot help you here with medical concerns, and lying or not disclosing things to the insurance company is illegal so we don't allow that either.

  • Is there a good way to transfer the scent from an old toy to a new toy?

My pup has 3 sizes of the Kong bears and she destroyed her first one, the smallest one; her favorite toy. She carries it with her through the house as she follows me and it's too adorable.

Is there a way to transfer the scents on it to a new one? I don't know, like maybe soaking them both on the same water for a couple of hours or.. I don't know I'm not a rocket surgeon.

She's had the toy since she was a tiny potato. šŸ˜€

  • Sudden and Absolute Personality Shift w/ Harness? What’s going on?

Hello everyone. I’m the proud new owner of a 4-month-old goldendoodle we picked up from the breeder about a week ago. I’m hoping someone here can help me make sense of some odd shifts in her behavior.

Needless to say, she’s our first puppy and she’s been a handful. She’s a ball of energy, and the moment she finishes her (forced) naps, she’s running around the apartment, biting anything in sight, and getting bored of her toys almost instantly. We have to hover over her every second she’s awake. And when we put her down for a nap, she whines or barks loudly for 5–10 minutes.

Because she’ll be fully vaccinated in about a week, we’ve kept her in the apartment most of the day. As a result, we haven’t really started leash or harness training; we’ve focused almost entirely on potty and crate training.

Today, after a particularly chaotic round of biting me, the couch, and anything that moved, I put her harness and leash on out of sheer exhaustion and her mood shifted immediately. She wasn’t scared of it, but she instantly became calm, well-mannered, and orderly. She laid on the couch with me and gently played with her toys. I never had to touch the leash to correct anything. And when it came time for the crate, I removed the harness, put her inside, and for the first time ever she didn’t make a sound.

What is going on? It almost feels like positive reinforcement (ā€œgood girl,ā€ treats, etc.) and positive punishment (brief time-outs, removing stimulation) aren’t doing much, but she’s treating the collar or harness like negative punishment (something she doesn’t want) and behaving perfectly. Is that a reasonable interpretation?

She’s very smart, and it’s hard not to think she’s learned that she can push boundaries when we use positive reinforcement or mild corrections. What am I to take of this lesson when it comes to training going forward?

  • Frankenweenie

Anybody ever see the first adaptation of Frankenweenie? Not the 2013 but Tim Burton first wrote the script in 1984 with Shelley Duvall. It's 24 mins long on Disney+ I highly recommend it and its a cute/sad short. Watch it and get back with me.

  • Help! My crate trained 14 week old puppy barks for 4-5 hours at night

Hi everyone! I’m losing my mind, so I’m hoping you all might be able to help.

I have a 14 week old mini poodle who currently weighs 5lbs. During the day, we follow a 2-1 nap schedule, and he naps in his crate just fine without making a sound. Sometimes, he’ll even take 4-5 hour naps in his crate during the day, and we have even had to start waking him up.

Recently, however, he’ll go down for bed time at 10:30 and sleep just fine till 1am. After his potty break, however, he loses his mind and will bark non stop for 3-5 hours straight. I sleep on the couch next to him, and I have even tried sitting next to the crate with my hand in it, but it doesn’t seem to slow him down at all. I have started moving him to his play pen after the potty break, and he still barks there, which is very rare during the day.

Yesterday, we thought we would tire him out a little more to see if that helped, so we took him with us all day in the sling. He napped maybe two hours all day, but the pattern was the same. The second he got home he went to bed no problem. Then after 1 am, crazy barking till 4 am.

The craziest thing is that during the day he’s not really a barker. He only ever barks when he is in his crate and needs to go. We live in an apartment, and so far everyone has been really gracious, but having him continue to bark for 4 hours every night is not an option.

He also sleeps with classical music on, and he have tried leaving a light on, but none of that seems to help. Any ideas?

  • Chews, toys, and enrichment for a puppy?

Hi! I just adopted a 14 week old 7 pound puppy. He is probably a Jack Russell chihuahua mix.

This is my 4th Jackhuahua but it’s been awhile since I had a puppy.

Recommendations for chews, toys, and enrichment? Especially for the chews.

He is still not used to going outside for walks so I need things in here to keep him busy.

    Thank you!
