[Breeds] Which breed would be the best breed for me?
- Copy/paste the text below into a new text post..
- Replace "ANSWER" with your response but do not delete the asterisk (*). Leave a space between the asterisk and your response.
- Remember to include [Breeds] in the title of your post.
Introduction
- Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?
- My first dog personally, but have been around dogs most of my life, and we currently have a 3 year old Bernadoodle that my girlfriend raised from a puppy. (We live together now, been together 2 years almost)
- Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?
- i have a preference for reputable breeders
- Describe your ideal dog.
- Moderate energy, low shed, medium-large, not super barky (I'm fine with some occasional barking, but not constant), eager to please, and ideally fairly trainable as a puppy
- What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?
- This is why im here. I think I would enjoy poodles (or doodles, though I know they are frowned upon so will probably avoid one), the idea of a Labrador or golden retriever sounds good as well
- What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?
- Nothing outside the ordinary tricks
- Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport?
- Nope
Care Commitments
7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?
- I'm happy to play/train until they lose interest or get tired
- How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?
- 1-2 hours just walking, can do more if needed. Can also take him to parks, etc.
- How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?
- I'm fine with brushing for 30 or so minutes daily. Open to grooming myself, or using a groomer like we currently do for our doodle.
Personal Preferences
10) What size dog are you looking for?
- Medium-Large dog would be good. Our current dog is about 55-60LBS.
- How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?
- I would prefer minimal slobber, barking is fine, and ideally minimal shedding, but could be open to a moderate amount.
- How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?
- i would love to have an off-leash dog, but i don't mind too much if it wouldn't ever be possible.
Dog Personality and Behavior
13) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?
- Definitely want a snuggly dog ideally.
- Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?
- eager to please
- How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?
- i would want them to be neutral, or even excited to see whoever.
- Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?
- Ideally not, as we currently have one.
- Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?
- i would like to avoid reactivity/aggression towards our current dog haha.
Lifestyle
18) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?
- 2-4 hours max.
- What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?
- None really, just ideally not insanely high energy.
- Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?
- We have a 3 year old doodle.
- Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?
- Not as of now.
- Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?
- Currently renting, no restrictions.
- What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?
- No restrictions.
- What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?
- Summer 15-25, Winter can get cold, anywhere from 5 to -10

Why does my dog only want to eat food on the floor not their bowl?
My dog does not love eating food out of her bowl but if I put it on the floor she will eat it right away. I’d keep it in the bowl but then she doesn’t really eat. Any tips?

New puppy
Hello everyone!
So I recently rescued a 6 month old terrier mix. He is a very sweet dog and he is doing pretty good at potty training. The issues I’m running into is his behavior with my current dog. I currently have a 3 year old Boston terrier. At first they got along pretty good, besides my new puppy playing a little rough. But the past couple of days I’ve noticed my rescue puppy snapping at my Boston over attention. Last night my puppy was laying on me, and my Boston came over to get pet and my puppy snapped at him. Then today, my puppy snapped at my boston again today and was growling over attention. I have been giving them equal attention as well. Is this normal behavior for a shelter puppy? If it is what is the best way to nip it in the butt? My puppy is pretty stubborn, so the redirecting and gentle training isn’t working out the best. I also don’t wanna put him in his cage for time out because I don’t want him to associate his cage with punishment. If anyone has some advice I’d really appreciate it. I really wanna see them become best buddies, because my Boston was best buddies with my last dog who passed away.

Puppy whines when I leave the room, whether or not he can see me
Hi all,
We have an 11 week old mini bernedoodle puppy that we've had for a little over two weeks. This subreddit's resources and posts have been very helpful in navigating our time together so far, thank you all!
I have one problem I can't figure out. We live in a 1 bedroom apartment with an open living space. He has access to the living/dining room and we have baby gates to keep him out of the bedroom/bathroom and kitchen. He can see the whole apartment, even with the gates and I don't normally close any of the doors. When I go into the bedroom, he whines/cries and puts his front paws on the top of the gate. It doesn't feel like actual distress or separation anxiety, it feels like FOMO. 75% of the time, he'll give up after a few minutes and go back to what he was doing before I left.
I've seen/heard him actually distressed when I've had to leave and in the beginning of crate training before we reworked our approach and this doesn't seem nearly the same. He would be much louder and throwing himself at the gate. I know separation anxiety/stress is normal for a puppy but he can see me, I'm at most 20 feet away and I always come back to his space pretty quickly. I don't want him in the bedroom as it's not puppy proof and I need to get dressed, put away laundry, etc. He sleeps in there in his crate but thats all.
I've tried talking to him, ignoring him, not coming back until he stops whining, not re-entering the living space until he gets off the baby gate, nothing seems to change. What do I do?

My french bulldog puppy doesn’t want to go outside
I have a french bulldog puppy, he is 13 weeks old. We have had him for 5 weeks now, we’re living in Denmark where it’s pretty cold and we have tried to take him out / walk outside since we got him. He really hates it! Everytime we’re going outside, he’s peeing/poops and then wants to go inside again or standing still and beeping a bit. He doesn’t want to play outside or snacking. He just want to go inside asap. We have tried with a warm shirt to him because of the weather, but it makes it even worse. Is this normal french puppy behavior, or do you have any recommandations?
