  • Strange behavior from puppy while eating

Please forgive my ignorance, this is my first dog and I'm trying to do right by him. He's a 7-month old rescue, half Shar-Pei and half Blackmouth Cur. Overall, his training is going well, he seems happy, and we get along really well.

The strange behavior I'm referring to is that, while in the middle of eating, he walks over to his bed, sits down for about 3 seconds with his back to the food bowl, and looks up. Then he returns to his bowl to gobble down the rest of his food. Sometimes he does that a couple of times, sometimes he doesn't do it at all but it never lasts for more than a few seconds.

At first I thought his kibble was too dry for him to swallow easily, so I've started to soak some of it in warm water. He definitely eats it more enthusiastically, but that strange thing he does hasn't stopped. I'm at a complete loss about what he's trying to tell me…

  • Started work w/ dogs and I’m scared…

Hello everyone! I just started work at a doggy daycare and there's around 50 dogs that we take care of everyday.

I LOVE dogs and find their company sooo fun and meaningful, but at the same time I am scared cuz some of 'em get mad at each other and I have to break up fights.

I do not want to get bitten. I always see those stories on the news of someones face getting bitten off.

I am paranoid that some of em will just randomly jump on to my face and bite it off. Is this a rational fear? Some of 'em already do it but its playful but they got high hops. Some of these dogs could really hurt me badly.

Do any of you have any experience with working at a doggy day care? I would like some tips?

Do you guys have any tips on how I can keep myself safe?

Can dogs just bite me for no reason or are there usually signs?

How to break up a dog fight properly??

I really love this job, but feel like my anxiety n overthinkin worse case scenario is bothering me a lot. I want to equip myself w/ knowledge so I do not have to worry so much.

  • My puppy doesn’t know how to stop playing with my oldest dog, help?

My 4-month-old border collie has been accompanied by an ethologist for 1 month and the truth is that we have had a lot of progress, but right now I am having problems getting her to stop biting and wanting to play all the time with my oldest dog who fortunately is the most patient boy in the world, but she did not manage to be in the same space with him, without her being on top of him all the time, do you have any advice or tips so she can settle down a little bit?

  • Puppy first flight- help!

My 5.5 month mini schnauzer mix had his first flight today- it was a long one… 5.5 hours. I got anti nausea meds and a calming med from the vet. I tested them both before hand, seemed ok. Got on the flight and he was panting, barking, whining the whole time. I was able to have him on my lap for a little and he was totally calm then. I also took him to the dog park for an hour to get him tired so he’d be more likely to sleep on the flight.

I’m mostly wanting to make sure he’s ok. Our flight back is at 8 am so will be a little different timing wise.

    Welcome any and all help!!

  • My dog stopped mouthing but is now doing it again. any thoughts?

My puppy is a 4 month old setter/golden mix. Over the last bit of time we have noticed phases come and go, counter surfing only lasted about 3 weeks but has now stopped. Mouthing stopped about a month ago but I am now seeing it start again..

We recently really focused on enrichment activities for him too, we got him a snuffle mat, lick mats, we hide treats, and give him frozen veggies and ice cubes. we also have a variety of toys from antlers, to squeakers to plushies and rubber ect.

But he has started mouthing again a lot. Specifically our hands and arms.

Any thoughts? Has this happened to you guys too? He has lost quite a few teeth as well.

  • Metal crate with bottom removable tray

    Hello

I recently bought a new metal crate with a bottom removable plastic tray.

While this makes sense to me in terms of cleaning (in the event of an accident, etc) as I can simply slide out the bottom tray, it means my puppy will be in direct contact with the top of the metal wire floor.

I doubt this will be comfortable or acceptable as a sleeping arrangement.

My question is, do people usually put some sort of bedding on the floor of the metal crate as an additional layer so their dog is not in direct contact with the metal wire floor?

    Thanks!

  • Temporary fostering a dog

    Hello,

I’m fostering a dog for 3 days before deciding do adopt him. I was told that his owner passed away and since then he developed severe anxiety. I took him home but now I think they’re lying. He has sneezed once and he coughed gently a few times. He got neutered 4 days ago. I have anther dog of my own with chronic bronchitis and I’m managing that . Now, my question is, do people at shelter lie? Also, can this dog worsen my dogs condition if he has some type of respiratory disease? I’m so sad that I may have to take him back .

  • Shaver recommendations for a very close shave

My dog has a lot of allergens and is very prone to skin infections. After a very protracted series of vet visits, she's on daily medication and we've done an allergen test to figure out what she's reacting to. She's also being bathed daily to help clear any allergens from her skin. The vet especially recommended we keep her shaved completely, even the insides of her ears, her paws and tail, to prevent allergens from getting caught in the fur and to help air her skin since it's very inflamed. They did it for us once before sending her back to us and it's a very close shave, like almost to the skin.

I've tried a few pet grooming kits and a cordless Wahl's shaver for this, but the grooming kits don't get remotely close to the skin and the Wahl's shaver kind of gets caught on her fur since it's thick and there's a lot of ground to cover. Is there any recommendations for a good shaver that can keep up with this sort of demand? I have to shave her weekly/fortnightly to keep her fur down.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
