  • Settling/calming down

we have a 6 month old pomeranian puppy and he’s just absolutely a nightmare. he is crate trained and sleeps great and settles in there all the time but when he’s free he’s just too much all of the time. we give him puzzle feeders for all meals and he can spend up to 30 minutes working on it some days. we walk him in the morning and afternoon. we play fetch at least once a day. however when he’s not in his crate he is always moving. he never settles and will either be jumping all over us on the couch or doing other puppy things. we try to reward any type of calm behavior but just the sight of treats gets him seriously worked up. and if we give him something like a yak chew he will somewhat calm down and chew that but if i need to get up or move for any reason he’s up too and either jumping on me or following me after he was kind of calm. it’s exhausting and we don’t really know what to do because he do enforced naps in the crate but i don’t want an adult dog that can’t just lay there while i get up to do like the dishes or something. is this normal or did we go wrong somewhere??

  • I feel bad for crating my pup

My 5 month old lab has a schedule of pretty much one hour awake followed by one hour in crate asleep. When she’s awake she’s mostly got my full attention. If I have an appointment I’ll try to leave at nap time and get back as soon as I can. I don’t think I’ve ever left her longer than 2.5 hours and she’s never been crazy or barking when I get home. Still, I keep it to one outing per day only if I have to. Here’s my concern: I’ve got puppy blues and I’m feeling really buried in this Groundhog Day of puppy care. I have lots of errands building up but I can’t figure out how long I can leave her. She’s very high energy. Could I go out and leave her crated for 3 hrs, come home, run her, etc. and then go out and crate her for 3 more hours? It feels unkind but is that really the case? Would it upset her? Could I have more freedom than I’m giving myself or is it really just the way it goes when I’ve got a young pup?

  • Megathread: Pet Insurance

Which pet insurance is best for you? Are there any that may cover your dog's current treatment? Did your dog get injured during the waiting period and want to know if you're covered?

    Here's the place to ask.

Do know we cannot help you here with medical concerns, and lying or not disclosing things to the insurance company is illegal so we don't allow that either.

  • Breed Confirmation

We rescued our dog when he was 12 weeks old from a well known Irish rescue centre. His birth certificate says that he’s a pocket bully, but ever since we got him, everyone who meets him assumes he’s a staffy!

We know the breeds are very similar, but is there a way we could know for sure? He’s our very first dog, and even we’re struggling to tell.

He’s 3 years old, weighs 20kg, and has quite a muscular/lean build. He’s a very hyper/energetic/determined dog when awake, but he can also sleep for long periods of the day.

Any suggestions on how to know once and for all?

  • Puppy weird with new people – unsure of a solution

Hello, I hope this is the right place for this! I have a pit mix puppy, she’s my first foster fail. I’ve had her since she was 2 weeks old and when it came time for her to be adopted out I couldn’t let her go and now she’s mine. She’s 4 months old and an absolute angel. So gentle and kind. She’s very smart and loves dogs, cats, horses, kids, everything! However, we are struggling with new adult people approaching us. When I am walking her on a trail or path and someone is walking towards us she will stop and growl, make a few low “ruff” sounds, and her hair begins to stand up. I usually walk her off to the side and crouch down with her as they walk past and she will calm down and continue walking. Yesterday, I took her to a pet store for the first time and of course many people asked to pet her. I allowed pets and seemingly so did she until she smelled them .. then she growls, hair raises, and she backs away. I comforted her and she calmed down and we went on our way. An employee approached and told her to sit and gave her a treat. She then was ecstatic to greet them and didn’t have any problems, she was even jumping on them and being very wiggle-butty which she usually doesn’t do in public. I don’t know how to properly handle this issue, hopefully someone has some insight! I don’t want this to manifest into her adulthood as she is seemingly going to be a larger pit mix and I just don’t want to scare anyone or have a large dog with this kind of behavior if it can be avoided.

  • Advice regarding vaccines

My new 12 week old puppy has had her first vaccine. Is it safe for her to be around my parents 11 year old dog who is up to date on all her vaccines and doesn’t have any illness that we are aware of. Or would she need to wait until she has had her final vaccine in two weeks? We weren’t given any advice and I’m getting conflicting information when googling. Just would like to know your opinions and experiences.

  • Recently discovered ‘traffic leashes’

And wow, is it a game changer! It now lives on my puppies collar more often than not. He loves carrying it around and walking himself, when people come to the door, he grabs a hold of it, and it keeps him somewhat occupied and jumping less cause he has something he feels he needs to do plus it’s much easier to grab the short lead than just his collar or harness to maneuver him around if he’s being stubborn and not listening .

Originally, I did think it would be an annoyance for him, but he barely even notices it most of the time and he’s big enough that it doesn’t touch the ground unless he puts his head down. Surprisingly he doesn’t really chew on it either. Game changer for a puppy! Just saying.
