  • Help! 16 week puppy will NOT nap no matter what we do.

I have a 16 week lab puppy, and he is a menace when he gets tired but he absolutely will not sleep at home. He's great when I bring him to work, he naps all day under my desk. Or I can put him in the car and he's relaxed and will sleep, but that's not practical especially when it's 10F out.

At home we can't figure out ANY strategy to get him to nap. Crate doesn't work, he screams and panicks until we let him out. Lights off and music doesn't work. Tethering doesn't work. White noise doesn't work. Covering his crate doesn't work. We live in an apartment so we can't let him go on barking.

Is this something he should grow out of and finally chill out? He's teething now so that might contribute but this has been a problem since we got him at 8 weeks… I know he's going through normal puppy stages but my husband and I haven't bonded with him all because he's so much anxiety-inducing work 24/7, and we joke that the breeder gave us a dud. Help!!

  • 7.5 month old puppy is a nightmare

My puppy is giving me such a hard time. He never was an easy dog, as he is a high energy working breed but we’ve been in training and I managed to get his needs met. For the last two months he was so well behaved and we had great connection.

Since about a week or two he started behaving as a teenager: little bit more mischievous, less sleep and not listening to simple commands. All this I was expecting but yesterday he levelled up big time. Full on reactivity on walks. Pulling like crazy, getting frustrated at the leash and starts biting it. Peed on the kitchen rug. I brush and bathe him every week, today he decided he is not having it. He growled at me when brushing his bum. Then he growled at me when putting on the pawbalm which he usually likes. He doesn’t seem to be in any pain (eats, walks, plays just fine).

I feel like we lost our connection and I don’t know how to get it back.

  • Dog poops when left alone in a room — anxiety?

My 9-month-old Golden Retriever keeps pooping every time he’s left alone in a room in the house.

He’s let out regularly and goes potty successfully every time, so I don’t think it’s a training issue. This usually happens even if he just went outside. It seems like some kind of stress or anxiety thing,

Anyone deal with this before or have tips on how to help him get more comfortable being alone?

    Edit: He is crate trained

  • Cost of owning a dog in 2025 in Alberta

First full year of owning a standard poodle in Alberta, Canada. She was born Jan 2024.

Below are my estimated costs, how do you think they compare to yours? Compared to last year, costs went up $100ish a month.

-vet care $1,493.07 (spay by itself was $400) -dog food $458.00 -treats, bones $476.38 -toys $85.00 -pro grooming $629.95 for 4 grooms (average cost $157.49) -home grooming $537.90 for 7 grooms (average cost $76.84) (savings per home groom $80.64) -dog sports $946.16 for 4 shows -training $250.00 (1 round, 1 sport) -boarding $923.40 (2 stays) -misc $455.50 -insurance $285.00 (cancelled mid year) -insurance reimbursement $154.46

total $6,385.90 Or $532.16 per month

Expected difference for 2026: – fewer vet fees – more dog sports but fewer hotel stays – fewer home grooming purchases for greater savings (no big purchases, just shampoo/etc)

  • Can dogs have sleep apnea?

My Catahoula Great Dane mix snores, flinches, dreams a lot, and can’t stay awake. I’m genuinely curious.

  • Advice for adopting an older dog

After a lifetime of owning dogs I find myself dog-less. I lost my German Shepherd a little over a year ago, and my faithful mutt about 6 weeks ago. Life seems very empty and gray. Because of my age and health I don't feel good about getting a young dog. It wouldn't be fair to the dog, and as it would probably outlive me, be fair to my family.

I've been looking for a senior dog to give it the best last few years of its life but discovered they don't come along very often. I stumbled on a 5 year old Springer Spaniel that ticks all the marks. Laid back, easy going, happy with a comfy bed, good on a leash, knows his basic commands and gets along with other dogs, cats and people.

I think I'm going to go for it. I'm still physically able to walk him a couple of times a day. And 5 or 6 times a week I'm able to take him to a rural area for some off leash fun (depending on his recall) as I have done for the past twenty years with my other dogs.

This will be my first time adopting an older, used, pre-owned dog. :). I'm onboard with the 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months concept. Any other advice for an older guy adopting an older dog. This will be a first for me and your thoughts would be appreciated.

  • Dog not wanting to be around other sick dog

Hi everyone. So my 11 year old dog got a splendectomy and just got back from the hospital yesterday. He is a very sick dog and doesnt have much time left.

The thing is my other dog who was absolutely obsessed with him is staying clear of him. Previously she would always sleep/sit next to him and follow him every where he goes. Now she hardly will be in the same room as him. Is it because she knows he's sick and wants to protect herself? Just curious

  • Megathread: Pet Insurance

Which pet insurance is best for you? Are there any that may cover your dog's current treatment? Did your dog get injured during the waiting period and want to know if you're covered?

    Here's the place to ask.

Do know we cannot help you here with medical concerns, and lying or not disclosing things to the insurance company is illegal so we don't allow that either.
