  • harness, collar, etc, I’m stressed!

Hi everyone! We have a 16wk old puppy who we are working on loose leash training with/heel and he pulls a lot so we need to switch the collar to something else until he gets better at it.

There is so much back and forth on what to get puppies to wear and I’m very overwhelmed.

What do I get my puppy to wear for during while I’m leash training etc, or when he’s on a long line, that won’t hurt him, and will help with the not pulling training?

  • My puppy is a totally different dog after grooming

He is a 12 months old poodle and had to be shaved after having long hair. I understand it can take a while for them to get used to it and changes in behavior is expected but it’s like if it was a totally different dog.

He doesn’t listen at all, is extremely clingy which is affecting my day to day life. He wants to be next to me all the time but I cant touch him.

Outside, he pulls, don’t listen, body slam me when I put him in a long lead. He is not telling me when he needs to go potty, he holds it until I take him out.

The good thing is that he is eating, drinking water and still plays.

How long should I wait for his behavior to improve back to the good boy he was before or should I start training him again? I’ve been giving him space and just time to decompress. It’s been three days after grooming. I feel I don’t like him right now but I know he went through a bit change.

  • Looking for a heavy-duty outdoor pressure gate (big dogs)

Hi everyone! I’m looking for an outdoor pressure-mounted gate that’s weatherproof and heavy-duty and I’m hoping for some recommendations.

I have an outdoor patio but I’m renting so drilling into brick/concrete isn’t an option. I also have a 80 lb dog and a Rottweiler puppy, so I need something that won’t budge or topple if they lean on it or test it. I’m not planning to leave them out there unsupervised, but I still want peace of mind that it’s secure and won’t shift or fall.

The best option I’ve found so far is the NMN Designs Libro Metal Outdoor Dog Gate w/ Door (28.5"–61.5" extra wide, modern 32" tall, pressure-mounted). It seems like one of the only gates actually designed for outdoor use with a heavy duty weather-resistant build but it’s expensive (about $400 even with a discount) so I’m trying to see if there are other solid alternatives before committing.

Has anyone used this gate specifically? Or found something similar that actually holds up with big/strong dogs?

Would really appreciate any recommendations or experiences — especially from people with larger breeds!

  • Advice? 9 Week Old ECS – First 24 Hours

Hi everyone, I brought home my 9-week-old English Cocker Spaniel yesterday and I’m honestly feeling really defeated and could use some advice or reassurance.

We flew home late last night, and since he hadn’t eaten since that morning, I fed him a bit in his crate right away to start building a positive association. After that, I took him out to the real grass patch on my balcony and he actually went, which felt like a great start.

The night, however, was really tough. He was waking up about every hour to hour and a half crying and yelping. Since it was his first night, I didn’t feel right letting him cry it out, so I kept the crate covered and would stick my fingers in just to comfort him (without letting him see me) until he settled, then repeated that pretty much all night.

Today has been a bit of a struggle. I have him set up in a pen with his crate and haven’t given him access to the rest of the apartment yet. I play with him in the pen, and when I take him out for potty, I put on his harness and leash and carry him straight to the balcony. Sometimes he goes, but other times he just sits there. When that happens, I bring him back in, put him in the crate for about 10 minutes, and then try again. Despite that, he’s had a couple pee accidents in the pen.

Naps and crate training have also been hard. I’ve been crating him for naps with the crate covered and white noise on, and I’ll sit there with my hand in the crate until he settles. But he wakes up every 30 minutes crying unless I go back to him. I’ve thought about letting him cry it out, but it’s only day one and I also live in an apartment, so I’m really unsure what the right approach is.

The hardest part of today happened after one of his naps. He woke up, we played a bit, and I gave him a lick mat with a few mashed blueberries, a small amount of unsweetened applesauce, and a bit of pumpkin. He had some water after that, and then I took him out for about 20–30 minutes trying to get him to go, but he wouldn’t. I assumed he was overtired, so I put him in the crate and stepped away for a few minutes to breathe. When I came back about 10 minutes later, he had diarrhea all over himself and the crate. I had to bathe him and clean everything, and honestly I just completely broke down after that.

For context, he’s been on the same food as the breeder (NOW! Puppy), and the only new things I’ve introduced are some Crumps beef liver and chicken treats, plus that lick mat.

I guess I’m just trying to figure out if I’m doing things the right way. I’m not sure how to handle potty training in this setup, especially since I’m carrying him out every time and don’t know how he’s supposed to signal that he needs to go. I also don’t know if the diarrhea was from too many treats, the lick mat, stress, or some combination of everything.

I’m really trying to do everything “right” — feeding in the crate, building positive associations, keeping a routine — but today just felt like a lot and I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed.

Any advice or reassurance would really mean a lot right now.

Oh and for his bed… do I wash it? Toss it? What’s the best course of action here.

  • Brought 8 week old puppy home today!

Brought home an 8 week border collie puppy today! I introduced him to my 6 year old border collie. Overall it went okay. my 6 year old is a bit reactive as she had a traumatizing experience with a friend's dog. the 6 year old was visibly anxious at first and even snapped at the puppy but overall I maintained distance while allowing the puppy to explore his new home. For the most they kept to themselves but it wasnt all doom and gloom at the end my 6 year old was playing a little peek a boo and trying to engage more with the puppy. lol at that point the puppy's attention was elsewhere but I took it is a positive anyway.

so here is the question for the community, Im assuming like with most relationships in life theirs will develop over time but I wanted to hear from those who had a similar experience to mine (i.e., introducing a puppy to an adult dog and they didnt hit it off right away). Did their relationships improve over time? Do you have any tips to foster the relationship?

  • 5-month-old Mini Goldendoodle – Walk/Run help

I am struggling to get my 5-month-old Mini Goldendoodle to walk properly. Here is a breakdown of his behavior:

    • Walking away from the house: This is always a struggle. I usually have to cheer him on, lure him, or gently pull him to keep him moving.
    • Walking toward the house: He bolts and pulls me the entire way back.
    • On our street: He is generally fine as long as the house remains in sight.
    • Running: He loves running instead of walking. He bites his leash while running and runs in a zig-zag pattern, which makes me afraid I’ll trip.

I tried taking him to a park to remove the "house" variable, but he just replaced the house with the car. He refuses to walk away from the car and pulls me back toward the parked location.

    Motivation & Training:

    • Food: He has low food drive; he only likes a few specific treats.
    • Toys: He loves balls. I’ve tried tossing a ball ahead of us to encourage him to move forward. He will find the ball, but he won't fetch it—he just sits next to it. So, then, I walk up to him, throw the ball further ahead and he will go find the ball and so on…

What should I try next to help him feel more confident walking along with him?

  • Dog bowl help

    Hi,

I’m looking for dog bowl recommendations that meet the following criteria:

    – stainless steel bowls

    – two bowl elevated stand set up, ideally

    – removable bowls with non-slip bottoms so we can take them when we travel and they won’t move around when used without the stand

    – medium sized bowls (he’s an Australian cattle dog)

Any insight or help you guys can offer is much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

  • Ruffland Kennel question

Hi everybody! I just ordered my first Ruffland kennel, and I am so excited! What are everyone's must-haves for the crate? Is the pad that Ruffland sells for it worth it? I am gonna order a nameplate from etsy, but that is more for aesthetics than anything else. For reference, I am getting the intermediate with the front and left-side door. Thank you!

  • How do you train a dog to use doggy stairs?

My mini poodle mix won't use the 4-step stairs I got her. I've tried luring and leaving high value treats in a line for a month. Nothing works.

She'll put her two front paws on the staircase but not her back feet. She will reach up high to the third step, and that's it.
