  • Puppy not peeing as much as I expected?

I just got my female yellow lab puppy on Friday, she’s 16 weeks now. Took her to the vet and she was an angel, everyone adored her. No issues besides an ear infection we’re working on clearing up.

She’s doing amazing with crate training and potty training. We just got into a real schedule this week since my husband is at work and my oldest is at school, so it’s mainly me working with her. She’s so smart and truly just a dream of a puppy. Loves her kennel, sleeps through the night, good with “sit” and working on recall.

My only concern (and maybe I should’ve brought this up to the vet, but I had two of my kids with me and well… mom brain lol) is that she really doesn’t seem to pee that much? She’s very good at holding it. She held it the entire 5 hour drive home from getting her, holds it overnight no problem, I stay home but if I have to take the kids to an appointment I know she’s going to be fine in her kennel. I give her water with all her meals and then mid morning and mid evening I’ll give her some extra. Everything I’m seeing says puppies her age pee around 6-10 times per day, but she’s at maybe 4 times? They are pretty long pees and she isn’t struggling to go or show any signs of discomfort or anything. She also only poops once a day, sometimes twice. Not sure if this is worth bringing up since she doesn’t have any other concerns, or if she just has a bladder of steel?

Today- she peed around 6am, then again at 10:30am (pooped too) and it’s now 4:30pm and I’ve taken her out maybe 3 times since and she still hasn’t gone.

    Thanks!

  • Should I be worried about this or no?

My puppies been doing great with potty training. We live in an apartment, and we let him pee right outside, which is next to our landlords fence, who has dogs.

My dog was just peeing, and then her dog ran over and started barking and scared our dog, so he stopped peeing immediately.

He went out and peed after, but will this cause any potty training regression, or fear in him to pee outside? Im glad he peed outside after, and im probably over thinking, just need some reassurance.

  • Should I get pet insurance?

Hi! I have pet insurance for my 2 cats, and I got a puppy last week. I was wondering if I should add her right away?

Also, which pet insurance do you recommend? I have spot pet and pay about $50 monthly for my cats. It has a $250 deductible and covers 80% of the costs. Is that good?

  • Regression/reactivity at 11 months

Our springer spaniel had an easy adolescence in the first couple months, but since around 10.5 months old, she's been a lot more anxious about noises and other dogs. She'll still follow commands pretty well– she's just a lot more spooked at things than she used to be.

It's on our walks or park visits that she'll get spooked. Yesterday she didn't wanna go outside because of construction on our neighbor's house (loud hammers etc.). Today she was scared of a loud group of geese on the other side of the park, like lunging to get back to the car.

It never used to be this way. I'm wondering if it's that she's been out of the house less this winter from all the blizzards we've had this year.

Anyway– is this normal for the age? Any advice for helping her?

  • Harness and leash suggestions

Hi doggo moms & dad’s so here’s the sitch.

My pup (4mo. Husky) has gone through TWO Top Paw harnesses that we have bought at PetSmart. She keeps biting through them. She is teething so I have plenty of toys for her to chew on.

My boyfriend and I typically have been having her wear it numerous times throughout the day when we’re out going for walks or to prevent her from having accidents in the house.

I’m wondering if there are any other sturdy and fabulous quality harnesses and leashes that she isn’t able to bite through/hold up well.

  • Megathread: Pet Insurance

Which pet insurance is best for you? Are there any that may cover your dog's current treatment? Did your dog get injured during the waiting period and want to know if you're covered?

    Here's the place to ask.

Do know we cannot help you here with medical concerns, and lying or not disclosing things to the insurance company is illegal so we don't allow that either.

  • Looking for Temporary Foster for My Small Dog (Sacramento area)

Hi everyone. I'm trying to find a temporary foster for my dog Layla while I work on stabilizing my housing situation.

Layla is an older Chihuahua/terrier mix (about 15 lbs). She’s very gentle and good with other pets. Recently she’s been having some bladder issues, but I will provide doggy diapers and supplies if needed.

I’m NOT trying to surrender her. She’s my dog and I want her back once I’m able to get stable housing again. I’m just trying to make sure she’s safe and cared for in the meantime.

I’m able to contribute monthly toward her food and care, and I’d stay in contact.

If anyone in the Sacramento area might be able to help, or knows a rescue or foster network that might help with temporary placements, please message me. Even advice or referrals would mean a lot.

    Thank you.

  • I adopted a dog 6 months ago and I’ve pushed my body too far

I (40F) adopted my dog six months ago and she has become the joy of my life.. She’s the happiest and sweetest companion and our time together means everything to me.

Since the beginning we’ve been doing long hikes together every day. About an hour and a half through steep hills, big descents, rough trails, sometimes barely passable paths. We go exploring, tracking smells, wandering through the woods together. At first I had a lot of energy for it and I loved every minute.

But lately my body is starting to struggle. My legs are exhausted and I’m dealing with a lot of muscle fatigue. Honestly I feel like my body needs at least two full days of zero walking to recover.

The problem is that I can’t imagine disappointing her. Every afternoon she’s so excited to go out and I know how important those outings are for her. Where I live there’s no one who can help walk her, so it’s just the two of us. I keep going out anyway because I don’t want to let her down, but physically I’m reaching my limit.

    What can I do? 🤧

    Thank you!

  • Keeping Dog off dinner table

I’m at my wits end. Anyone have tips for keeping the dog off the dinner table? I have a 7 pound chihuahua mix that is about 1 years old. For the last few weeks, she jumps onto a chair and onto the dinner table. Not when we are there. After we eat, in the middle of the day, anytime we are not sitting around it. And yes, I do supervise her and confine her when I can’t. But of course I can’t keep her prisoner, and there are times when I am busy with my kids and she takes advantage of that time. What HAS worked is one of those electric collars. I will trigger it when she goes near the table to jump on the chair, and now she has learned. HOWEVER, she has associated that with me (if I am home she will not jump on the table). Now, the only times she will jump on the table are when I am at work or in the shower. This is really taking a toll on my mental heath because anytime this dog isn’t caged, I’m focused on supervising her and watching thru the camera that she doesn’t jump on the dinner table. Because I think that’s a disgusting habit! Our dinner table is our clean safe space! I should be able to leave a cup of cofffee and not worry about the dog knocking it down to drink it! Or licking the table. Or taking my food if I need to run to the bathroom. I’ve tried EVERYTHING. positive reinforcement, awarding her for positive behavior, awarding her when she doesn’t go to the bathroom table, you name it. HELP.

  • I really want a dog but am not sure if I’ll pass the home inspection

Hi everyone. So I’ve fallen in love with a dog whose rescue does home inspections. The dog itself doesn’t need anything in particular (no disability, no need to live alone/with pets, no fenced in yard, etc), so I assume the check is just to verify I live at the given address and there’s no obvious hazards. However the problem is I have open back stairs and while they’re not super tall/steep the dog is fairly short, and I fear they’re going to have a problem with that. I’m open to investing in maybe some kind of netting but want to know if they’ll even look at anything like that before I buy baby-proofing for a dog I don’t even have yet.

For context he’s a mix and they have no idea what he is, but he’s not snub nose or stub-legged, just on the shorter side. He’s kind of beagle-esque?

I considered telling them I’m going to gate off the stairs but my downstairs isn’t that big and I feel like they won’t like the idea of him being confined to just the first level. I would just love some advice of maybe how people with similar stairs got approved? Or just if anyone knows what they may look for during home inspection? I really love this dog and would be so upset if my stairs are what keeps me from having him.
