  • I’m taking care of my aunts puppy but I’m scared she will get too attached to me

Just to days ago my mom came and told me that I will be taking care of my aunts puppy until she gets all her shots, she’s a month and a half old and since she can’t travel yet my aunt can’t have her, I of course happily agreed since I love dogs and why wouldn’t I do this for my aunt? I’m going to be taking care of her for around a month until my aunt is able to pick her up, we can’t have her running around the house because we have a 9 year old chihuahua downstairs that just goes around everywhere so being in my room is the most liable option. A few years ago I discovered I was allergic to dogs so it been a little bit hard on my body having her near, just right now my eyes and arms feel itchy, but she cries when I don’t pick her up when she’s awake. I really don’t know what to do because she already seems attached and I don’t want to cause problems for my aunt later on, she’s very excited to finally have a puppy since she’s dreamed about it for years.

  • Bringing home a large-breed puppy soon — what am I forgetting?

Hi everyone! I’m bringing home a puppy in about three weeks and I want to make sure I’m setting him up for success. He’ll be a German Shepherd / Golden Retriever mix, currently six weeks old and already about the size of a nine-week pup. He’ll be around nine weeks old when we bring him home and his name will be Moose. He’s expected to be a big guy.

I’ve already set up a large play pen (photo attached) with a washable rug that has a waterproof backing, puppy pads, and food and water bowls. I also have a crate on the way, which will sit inside the pen. I took three weeks off work so I can be fully present during his transition and focus on bonding, training, and establishing routines.

We do already have another dog in the home. She’s a German Shepherd / Malamute mix and we rescued her when she was about a year and a half old. She’s almost four now and generally does well with other dogs, but it’s been a while since we’ve had a puppy in the house, so I’m feeling a little nervous and want to be thoughtful about introducing them and setting clear boundaries for both dogs.

For those of you who have raised puppies, especially large breeds, what are the must-haves people tend to forget? Is there anything you wish you had done differently in the first few weeks? I’d also love any advice on managing a puppy alongside an adult dog, particularly with two shepherd-type dogs in the home. I’m open to all suggestions, including the “learn from my mistakes” kind. I just want to give Moose the best possible start. Thanks so much in advance.

  • Has there been any studies in the different preventative medications lifespan?

Has there been any studies on the different flea, tick, and heartworm medications and lifespan? For example heartguard vs topical vs collar etc.

Of course the benefits are proven and may be worth any ill effects. But say one might shorten your dog's lifespan from 10 years to 9, or another 9.5, or not at all. Those are things that would be worth knowing. Similar to how taking asthma medication long term has an effect on your lifespan for example.

  • How do you stop your dog from eating acorns?

For those of you who live in areas, like me, with loads of acorns all along the streets, sidewalks, and grass how do you keep your dog from eating acorns?

My dog will not stop munching on one each time we go out for a walk. No matter how much I try to avoid the areas with the highest concentrations of them she will still sniff out a lone acorn somewhere and be munching on it in a flash. She is so sneaky too. She knows I will try to immediately get it out of her mouth so she puts it way in the back of her mouth and crunches twice and swallows right after…

Added context: Our HOA has rules that every front yard must have a minimum of 2 oak trees. So we have acorns everywhere. Everywhere.

  • What are some things/items that you add to your washer or dryer that actually work to collect or get hair of laundry?

I've been looking at things on Amazon and other places that claim that when you put this or that item in with the wash or dryer, it helps collect the hair and get it off fabrics and blankets instead of it getting caught in the drain filter of the washer or just sticking to the laundry itself. Does anyone have any tips or know ones that actually work for them? One thing I read you can do before you wash a blanket with a lot of hair on it is put it in the dryer no heat fluff for a couple of times and that gets a lot of the hair out, and it kinda works.

  • Best pet art services for multiple pets in one picture?

My partner and I have 3 rescue dogs and would love to get all of them in one piece of artwork (ideally something fun or cartoonish). Has anyone had luck finding artists or companies who do artsy group pet portraits well? Seems like it could get messy with lots of animals lol. Art⁤ify Your Pet has a sample on their site with two cats in it, so I'm leaning towards them. Open to suggestions! We’re based in Texas if that changes anything.

  • How to take dog out to potty during snowstorm?

I just moved to Boston from California a couple of years ago and this is my first real snowstorm. I live in an apartment and take my dog to a park a block away for me for potty. What do I do during the snowstorm? Would it be a bad idea to take her out once the storm hits this afternoon?

Edit: Thank you everyone! Your responses are super helpful.

  • Very lucky or very rare? (Corgi)

I’ve had my Maraluna. For some time now and she just a very chill dog ion hear her whine or bark or nothing unless she has a new dog toy and then she whines that is one of my questions if one of yall don’t mind answering. She whines when she has a toy. And the only time she barks is when I’m getting ready to leave the house. But other than that nothing. She had her fair share of pooping and tearing things up but i immediately knew the issues to why she would act tha way and she never did it again. But again all she does is just chill and not much from her like videos I see online.

  • Canada pooch boots for tiny legs?

Has anyone with a short legged dog bought winter boots from the brand Canada Pooch? I have a weird shaped dog, lovingly called a corn dog by me. He’s a lab x dachshund and is around 40lbs with short legs. I really wanna try the boots from the brand, but I don’t really see any dogs with short legs in reviews or item pictures.

    Has anyone tried them?

I’m talking about the regular boots btw, not the suspender boots 🙂

I’ll also take recommendations of other brands if anyone has any! As long as they’re short legged approved and come in a big enough size for medium dogs 🙂

    I’m located in Canada !
