  • Week 4 Crate Training

My 13 week mini dachshund has been with us a little over 4 weeks now and while there has been progress with his crate training I’m still surprised we are still struggling a month in. Can someone tell me that’s normal 😅

He does well 80% of the time, he does best for day time naps and sleeping over night. However from 6pm-10pm if I try to put him down for a nap that’s when he loses his mind in his crate biting it, crying loudly, biting his bed/blanket draped over it and won’t settle for more than 5 minutes at a time. Then at that point he’s extremely over tired or a psycho biting monster if I let him out of the crate. I feel like this happens during his “witching hour” part of the day probably? Idk but I’m exhausted and I find myself getting so frustrated and overstimulated when I’ve been working all day and I can’t relax because that’s when he acts up the most. Any tips are welcome!!

  • Guide to milestones and vet care for first year?

Does anyone have recommendations on books or websites/pdfs give high level info and timeframe targets for vet care and development in the first year? I’m thinking like What to Expect When You’re Expecting but for puppies. Bonus if it’s specific to Golden Retrievers.

  • Help between dinners

    Hey all,

I have a staffy beagle mix – he is almost 11 weeks old- he is at around 5.5 kgs.

During the day – getting him to sleep during the crate is fine – but between 16:00 (his third meal) and his last meal – at 19:30 – he is out of control. I’ve tried settling, training, playing, kongs – all sorts – and he will not rest or sleep. He’s asleep now at about 18:40 – but he has been going since 16:15. Any tips or advice for this period?

He isn’t fully vaxxed yet so we can’t take him out – but over the weekend my partner and I walked with him in his sling – and he was wiped out after. Should I try doing that during this time?

I tried to force nap him – but he was really distressed so I had to stop.

    Thanks for any help!

  • What can I do to find him?

So my family member (Dave) and his wife moved in with my other family member(Alexa) who her husband and children live there but Dave has two dogs one male and one female, Alexa has 5 dogs also one male and 4 females, one of Alexa’s dogs started their period and the two male dogs started to fight where it’s all bloody and inseparable, we have mentioned to both Dave and Alexa to separate both the males or to just spay the females which they did separate them but Alexa’s young child keeps releasing all the dogs and continuing to make them fight but yesterday we found out that Dave tossed out his male dog which really upsets me because the dog isn’t guilty for a decision we can make about spaying and neutering. But Dave’s wife is truly emotional about this I have multiple dogs myself and sadly can’t take anymore but I feel like I could have taken him in a few days to find him a new loving home but I’ve put up some posts over social media trying to find him, but I have a feeling he’s gone just because there’s so many coyotes in our area but today I’ll try to go look for him myself in the possible area he’s “been” thrown but any thoughts of where I could possibly find him to at least know he’s fine ?

  • Museum for dogs?

I want to create a museum for dogs. Where they can learn about things that interest them and explore new ideas. Any thoughts about what sort of exhibits to offer? So far I have:

    • A smelling room with a vast array of different scents to discover.

    • A collection of images/videos that are visually stimulating for dogs (perhaps involving research into canine vision)

  • Games for dogs that don’t require an active human role

I work from home a few days a week and my pup is currently in his teenage phase where he likes to try to get on tables/counters or steal everything that's the tiniest bit loose in the house. If the things he steals are harmless (like dishcloths or socks) I just ignore it and pick it up later when he has lost interest. But if he starts tugging on things like curtains, I need to step in because he has the force to tear them down.

I try to give him some mental and physical stimulation outside of work hours, but at his worst, I can't work for 10 mins straight if he isn't tethered somewhere. When tethered (or restricted in access) he just lies down. I have seen many comments on reddit that dogs are not human and don't need to be entertained all day to have a good life, but I still feel bad to force him to lay down, if he clearly just wants to play and explore.

So I would like to give him something to do from time to time that does not necessarily involve eating. I have frozen kongs, lick mats, chew bones and hide some treats in a blanket for sniffing, but all of those are finished after 5 mins (or he gets bored with the harder chews). Any other, more durable game suggestions that don't involve active human participation (I can supervise while at work, just not play).

  • Cute training apparel

Yes it sounds superfacial. But does/did anyone find a brand or website that has cloths or vests for dog training for the human, so it can contain your snacks/toy/other training things for your dog. lots of pockets and doesn't look like fishing gear for men?
I want to have a cute bag or jacket with lots of pockets to go training with or walking the dog without looking like a fisher men or a potato sack.

  • anxiety ridden/reactive pup – need advice 🙁

My dog is turning 3 this year, and she is the sweetest most submissive little thing. She is my very first dog, and I got her at 13 weeks. Though she is so nice and loving to my me, my family, and people she’s known since a puppy, she is not so nice to strangers. She is not aggressive, but she is very scared and anxious around strangers which makes me fear that one day her fear will incite aggression in her as a response. I tried to socialize her the best I could as a puppy, I took her everywhere, let people pet her. She does eventually warm up to new people, it just takes meeting them a few times. While I think some of this anxiety is her breed (springer spaniel)/personality, I am wondering if there is anything I can do to help her be more relaxed around new people. Will dog training help, or make things worse? I just feel overwhelmed and afraid that this is how it will be forever.

Does your dog turn his head when he hears an odd noise? Does your dog bury their food with your pants? This is the thread to ask why.
