  • Puppy potty training schedule

Hey – curious about your pups potty schedules & training.

Do you have a bell or anything by your door that your puppy is trained to ring if they need to go out? Do you just make sure to take your pup out at specific times i.e., after food time, nap time etc. ? I’m a bit confused on if I should implement something for him to let me know he needs to go out or if I just get him on a scheduled of going out at certain times.

Also, how long did it take you all who brought home your puppy at a very young age to be just about fully potty trained and out of the pen?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Puppy feeding & enrishmet confusion!

    SOO I’m very confused on

    A. How to not over feed the pup: how do I split up his regular kibble meals along with enrichment feeding without over feeding him? Do you replace a regular meal in their food bowl and give it through enrichment toys?

    B. When you first got your pup, how long did you feed them in the crate to get them comfortable with being in there?

    C. How much is too much enrichment? How often should I be implementing enrichment feeding vs. regular bowl feeding?

    Thank you in advance!

    Signed,

    NERVOUS STB dog momma 😅

  • super smart puppy – what else can I introduce to our training?

I have a 9 month old rescue puppy. She’s been with me for about 3 weeks, was in a foster home for 2 (maybe 2.5 weeks) prior to adoption, and her background prior to foster home is unknown.

In the 3 weeks I’ve had her she’s learned:

    – sit

    – stay (with distance and while I’m out of view)*

    – come*

    – touch

    – spin (both directions)

    – down

    – shake

    – high five

    – crawl

    – sit pretty

    – drop it*

    – leave it*

    * we are still working on listening when distractions are around. she has typical adolescent moments where her ears are off. Also working on listening without expecting a treat *

She also learned how to press a talking button… in one day…

She’s learning tricks faster than I know what I should teach her next.

I know there are some basics we need to work on that aren’t listed – but she didn’t know how to live in a house when I adopted her. We were really focusing a lottt on basic commands and playing with toys and not biting for the first week. Now I feel so behind and don’t even know what I should teach her…

    On my list are:

    – leash training

    – better recall, better drop/leave it

    – working on relaxation protocol, we got stuck on task set 8. I have family visiting this week so our progress will probably slow with all of the distractions.

    – outside button/bell (she’s iffy on knowing how to ask to go outside. I typically bring her out before she needs to ask just as a break from excitement if she’s getting rowdy)

    – taking food/toys away from her *I could use some resources on how to properly go about this*

    – nail clipping/teeth brushing/bathing training

I have an in-home trainer visit and puppy classes starting soon. So any basics that I missed myself should be covered soon! What else should I focus on?!

  • Impulse control too much, too soon?

So, I have 2 English setters. A 3 year old male and a 3 month old female.

We trained the first setter ourselves and it went extremely well. He has excellent recall (hard to do for this breed) extremely obedient, and very loving. It feels like at this point you can speak to him like a human and he knows what you want somehow.

While training my new puppy, a thing that was important to me to hammer out was impulse control. A method I used to train that is by a “sit” “look at me” I would throw the treat, and make the puppy wait until her release word “okay” for her to get the treat. This was important to learn in my opinion so she waits for her food, waits for pets, and does not sprint out of doors when opened. “Wait” has been very helpful for my older pup.

Well, this has backfired. I am now trying to teach action commands. Commands like “place”, “bed”, “crate”, “inside”, and so on. She has developed the habit of when I walk her to her crate, and say the command, she sits and looks at me until I release her with “okay” to go to the place I told her to go.

I have tried throwing a treat opposite of the crate to get her out of her sit and stare mode, release her to the thrown treat, and then try to throw a treat in the crate or bed and simultaneously say the word “crate”. When I do that, she will get the first treat and then sit and stare at me until I release her to go get the treat in the desired place. I really do not want to repeat the word “crate” as I do not want to repeat commands however it just ends up in the worlds cutest staring contest.

How can I help her distinguish when it is a wait situation vs. an action commands?

  • tips for crate regression?

my puppy is 6 months old, has never had issues in the past and is now barking and whining bloody murder 🥲

It’s so loud, I’ve never heard her bark like this before. A friend of mine said it could be that she has bonded with me more and wants to be close in proximity?

It used to be if I sat next to her and ignore her at least she found comfort in me being near her.. but now it feels like that just escalates it more? I can’t tell.

We are doing crate games more, I’m trying to work on separation anxiety, i’m just worried this is going to make it difficult for her to settle long term in the crate.. any tips?

  • 11 week old Norwich terrier not eating.

Hi all, I’ve read several posts about puppies not eating and I feel like I’ve tried most of the suggested solutions already.

I have an 11 weeks Norwich Terrier who has started refusing his kibble. I’ve had him for about a week. I’ve tried adding warm water, mixing in a bit of wet food, heating up the food, and removing the food after 15 minutes. Every time, he just sniffs the kibble, kind of recoils, and walks away.

We saw the vet 3 days ago for vaccinations, and the vet suggested switching to 4 meals a day, which we’ve done and no positive results. I feel like he is eating less…

At this point, I’m not sure what else to try besides changing his kibble, but I’ve read mixed advices about it. Has anyone experienced something similar? What worked for you?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

*he eats treats, and his stool is normal 🙂

  • 18 Week old Cavapoo Potty Issues

My 18 week old Cavapoo, Roy, is an absolute angel. He is sweet, sociable and a pleasure to be around.

Training wise he is great in the crate – sleeps through the night without issue. He happily goes into his crate on command, sits for meals and has recently got much better at recall.

He has however regressed in his potty training. I was very ill recently (sofa bound) for a week and he has lost all sense of toilet training.

I take him outside first thing 10 minutes and he doesn't go. Pees as soon as he's inside. He'll poop when no one is around and just sits outside on the grass when I take him out.

I wait 5-10 minutes after every time he enters or exits his crate and he just won't go outside now.

It has been extremely wet in the UK recently and rained for 40 days also which doesn't help. Anyone have any recommendations? He was doing so well but seems like his routine is completely out now following me being ill.

  • Great Pyrenees Mix Sleeping Through the Night

Hi everyone! My partner and I recently adopted a puppy and unbeknownst to us she was given to us at 6&1/2 weeks old (at the time of this post). Yes I know that’s too young and we wish she had spent more time with mom and her litter mates. As you can imagine sleeping through the night is very difficult for her. Does anyone have any good tips or advice to help us out? I will list below what we have done so far to help her out!

-every time she falls asleep we pick her up and place her in her crate

-reinforce her crate time with plenty of treats love and toys

    – I get up with her every two hours or so to use the bathroom

-we don’t let her out when she’s crying we wait until she is calm and reward then

I am aware that this is a process and may take her some time to adjust but any additional advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  • My dog growls when he has his bone

    Hi everyone,

I have a 4 month old puppy and he’s been growling when we play tug of war or when he has his bones. I don’t think it’s serious bc when we play he’ll just chill after I win or after I let him win for tug of war and for the bones he’ll stop growling when I approach him when he has his bone. I think it could be from over excitement or maybe it’s his way of playing with them.

    What do yall think?

  • Who walks the dog more: you or your partner?

Me and my wife always jokingly argue how walks the dog more often.

I decided to settle the argument once and for all.

So I started tracking the walks by person.

Everyone sees total walk time/distance as well as by person – me, my wife, and the kids.

    GUESS WHAT?

    I lost.

I’m doing the dishes everyday this week 🤣

How do you guys track walks?
