  • Is it time to put my dog on anti-anxiety meds?

My dog has become increasingly anxious about walking on our floors, which are slippery for her. We’ve tried trimming her nails and paw fur, calming chews, training, rugs. Is it time to get some meds?

What is your experience with anti-anxiety meds for dogs?

  • Any advice for flying with dog in cabin?

I’ve flown with my small dog on cabin a few times now and it has never really gone great. She usually calms down in a bit but yesterday we tried to travel with her again and she bit through her carrier within 10 minutes of being at the airport and we had to leave.

I don’t think the problem is her carrier necessarily because she chooses to go in there all the time at the home, and I’ve even done short test runs where I close the carrier for a bit and she’s totally fine. I do also give her medication, a combo of gabapentin and trazodone. When I give her these meds and we’re at home she’s pretty out of it and just sleeps but yesterday she was acting like she didn’t have any meds at all.

I could really use some advice if any of you have successfully been able to travel with your dog in cabin and how? I realize she may not be a dog that can handle it but I don’t have a pet sitter and would like to make it work if I can.

  • Dog keeps carrying toys and whining, otherwise acting normal

Hello everyone, my dog is a 1.5-year-old English Setter. She has a habit of hiding bones and sometimes toys in our couch cushions. Yesterday she was digging in the couch trying to retrieve a toy she had hidden. I thought she was struggling, so I pulled the toy out for her.

After that, she started pacing around the house with the toy in her mouth and whining. I’ve helped her retrieve toys from the couch before, and she’s never reacted like this.

It’s now been about 24 hours, and she’s still pacing and whining while carrying toys, including different ones. Otherwise, her behavior seems normal: she’s active, alert, and interested in play but she is refusing to eat her kibble all of a sudden? She’ll eat like cheese or whatever, but not her own food.

She’s never done anything like this before, so I’m wondering if anyone has experienced something similar or has insight into what might be going on. I don’t think this warrants a vet visit at this point, but I do feel bad that she seems unsettled.

  • My dog LOVES Christmas.

My dog is obsessed with Christmas. Every Christmas morning, he somehow knows what day it is, and is the first one to go sprinting downstairs to see everything. We give him wrapped gifts and he gets really excited and starts unwrapping them. He somehow totally figured out the concept of tearing the paper off a present and then playing with whatever’s inside it. It’s just so stinking adorable to watch how happy he gets every Christmas morning. If you haven’t before, try giving your dog a wrapped present and see what they do.

  • How to apply paw balm?

I know HOW to apply paw balm but the issue is – my dog licks it off the second I massage it in. He goes absolutely crazy for it. I have tried different ones and he does that to all of them.

It kind of feels like there is no use in even putting it on for him 😭

Does anyone have any tips or tricks for this situation?

  • Megathread: Pet Insurance

Which pet insurance is best for you? Are there any that may cover your dog's current treatment? Did your dog get injured during the waiting period and want to know if you're covered?

    Here's the place to ask.

Do know we cannot help you here with medical concerns, and lying or not disclosing things to the insurance company is illegal so we don't allow that either.

  • Help, sudden once off fight between dogs

Hi there, I have two dogs, A who is a pitbull and B who is a slightly shorter staffy/pitbull mix. Both male and I've had both since they were puppies. A for 4 years and B for 2. Both were neutered together when B was about 9 months old.

They have always gotten along very well, playing together, sleeping on top of each other. They have never fought before and neither show any signs of resource guarding.

    The issue:

About a week and a half ago, while I was at work and they were outside, my neighbor was up on his roof, cleaning his gutters. A was standing on our patio, barking at the neighbors and B was standing, barking at A. My neighbor continued on when he noticed their noise had changed, turned around and the two dogs were fighting. Neighbor quickly got off his roof and they soon stopped. (This is all from what the neighbor told be/ his account of events)

When I got home, their behavior was completely normal. Excited to see me, happy to get inside. I noticed some scratches on B and initially brushed it off as nothing major, though he had gotten into the bushes and scratched himself up. I went to go clean him up and A came around to see what I was doing ( and if I was giving out treats or pets) and that's when I noticed the blood on A's neck. I immediately rushed to the neighbor to find out if they had fought( neighbor was coincidentally on his way to my house to tell me they had fought). Neighbor then told me what happened.

I went back inside, cleaned and bandaged the dogs as needed and took them to the vet, A has laceration and minor degloving on his neck that needed stitches, B just needed some anti inflammatory and ointment. Both are doing well and recovering.

The vet did not give me much advise or input on the fight, asides from "a series of unfortunate circumstances".

We haven't left them unsupervised since, but they are generally behaving as they have the last two years, friendly and loving too each other. We need to monitor then exstra closely as B keeps wanting to pick A's stitches so I am 100% sure they they have not shown any fear or aggression towards each other.

    My question is:

What can I do to ensure this doesn't happen again?

With the holidays starting now, a day will come where I need to leave them alone at home again and I can't keep them separate (garden won't allow it without massive expenses) nor do I believe it to be a viable long term solution. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am terrified of leaving them alone at this stage.
