Hi all 🙂
I’ve got a 7mo collie cocker cross who’s good as gold 80% of the time extremely affectionate sociable and sweet but a trainer has identified resource guarding and he’s bitten me with regards to this (high value treat) and also a couple of instances where he’s felt trapped (once stuck in a harness, another when he was being crowded by another dog while putting his harness on)
He communicates well he growls before biting, and with the harness incidents I had no choice but to go in and remove / put on the harness for safety. His triggers seem to be novel toys, and high value foods like pizzle sticks
With the harness I introduce it slowly and always give him treats for putting it over his head and then treats on the floor while I snap him in
With resource guarding, I’ve managed his environment and stopped giving him high value things he can choke on but naturally he does find things to steal and he does get growly and runs away. It’s made even playing fetch difficult but he has gotten better and hasn’t bitten me since he was about 3mo
I will be seeing a behaviouralist for both of these issues but wanted to post here to ask
– has anyone else experienced this and what did you do ?
– did it get better with training and over time ?
– how did you cope emotionally ? I’m so sad that my puppy bites me so hard and is so fearful
