Now I don’t need ‘it gets better’ because I am sure it does, and there is obviously light at the end of the tunnel. But I need practical solutions and advice from people who also thought they would probably die before their dog ever learned to be a perfect companion that fits into family life seamlessly.
We have a 6 month old Labrador, and he is wonderful. Crate and toilet training clicked almost instantly, and he has been to several levels of obedience training.
However, he still sees every dog & human as the most exciting thing in the entire world, and lunges to see them on walks constantly. We obviously don’t let him get to the things he wants to see, as we want him to learn to be neutral around them, but my GOD it seems impossible.
He also has developed a new attitude about being told no, and stealing cushions is a favourite activity.
What saved you during the teenage phase? And has anybody ever managed to turn around the levels of excitement on walks to have a calm dog that can walk towards & past dogs without completely losing his mind?
