Using the same space to go potty

Help me figure this out.

Ok I KNOW, if a dog goes potty inside you have to clean it really well, or they will smell it and continue going there. That I get, that’s not what’s happening.

My dog (who is otherwise potty trained) kept pooping/peeing in my office (it’s a rarely used space, so it was easy for him to get away with it) each time I’d clean it super good, and he would go again, within a week at most.

Finally I got frustrated and kind of gave up. And eventually (after 2 years of this) I just gave up and figured I’d just get new carpet.

So instead of scrubbing, I picked up the poop, gave it a halfassed cleaning, and let it be…. And then he stopped doing it.

The spot stayed accident free for months and months. Finally I’m like “ok let me bust out the carpet cleaner”. I cleaned it unlike anything I’ve ever done before.

And within 3 hours, he pooped in the exact same spot.

It’s like he wants his poop smell In that exact spot?
