Two new golden retriever puppies in our home

Hello all!

This last weekend, one of our neighbors posted that they had two puppies left from a litter that they had bred that they were looking to give to a family in the neighborhood to keep them close by. In the last few years, my husband and I have lost two of our very old dogs. We still have one older dog, and all of our pups we got before we had kids.

Our three kids range in ages from 4 to 9. Since we had two of our dogs pass in the last couple of years, I’ve been looking at shelters in the hopes of adding a new fur baby to the family. However, I would get so nervous bringing in a dog who is older and from a shelter to a house with our kids being so young and a place where the dog may ultimately not be comfortable or overwhelmed.

However, when our neighbor said they were looking to rehome these two puppies, I got very excited and thought this would be a great opportunity for our children to get some wonderful fur babies that they would be able to grow up with. It’s been a while since we’ve had puppies, so that definitely feels overwhelming right now, but I’m also wondering if anyone in this group has found success with a more relaxed approach?

The puppies are currently 18 weeks, so they’re already really good at going into their crates. They’re very nervous on leashes, but we have a huge backyard that they love being in. Of course, our family is very busy with the schedule of our kids, so I feel like the dogs get forced naps for things like me dropping the kids off at school, me running them to an activity, but I know I’m not being purposeful always with the times that they’re going down for naps, etc. I know golden retrievers tend to be a very friendly breed that’s good with families and children, but I guess I wonder if that’s still the case even with a more relaxed approach to training?
