Two-door car for a dog (or two)?

My partner and I currently don't have a dog, but our adoption application just got approved by a shelter that is a 1 hour drive from our home. We have 1 car and it's a 2 door coupe, the kind where the front seats fold forward and you climb behind them to get in the back.

We live in a condo with no yard, so we are looking for a smaller dog. The dog that inspired us to apply is about 30 pounds. This particular dog's profile said that he would do best in a home with another dog, so I'm also considering potentially maybe adopting two dogs at once. That might be my heart talking louder than my brain, though.

My concern is, am I going to have a difficult time getting dog(s) in the back seat of my car and driving safely? Do I shove my partner back there and let the dog(s) ride shotgun?

Any advice from coupe owners appreciated!
