Transport New Puppy on Plane

I am picking up an 8 week old Springer Spaniel puppy from a breeder 1400 km away. Driving was not an option so will be transporting home on a plane. The breeder will meet me at the airport and is supplying an airline approved soft crate. I managed to score a very low priced first class ticket so priority on and off and the airline has given approval on my ticket.

That said what advice can folks give me on the challenges I will face, toilet, food, etc. The flight is only 1.6 hrs but I need to check in 2 hours ahead of time and then there is the waiting for the flight and as always possible late flights. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
