I have a 9 month old rescue puppy. She’s been with me for about 3 weeks, was in a foster home for 2 (maybe 2.5 weeks) prior to adoption, and her background prior to foster home is unknown.
In the 3 weeks I’ve had her she’s learned:
– sit
– stay (with distance and while I’m out of view)*
– come*
– touch
– spin (both directions)
– down
– shake
– high five
– crawl
– sit pretty
– drop it*
– leave it*
* we are still working on listening when distractions are around. she has typical adolescent moments where her ears are off. Also working on listening without expecting a treat *
She also learned how to press a talking button… in one day…
She’s learning tricks faster than I know what I should teach her next.
I know there are some basics we need to work on that aren’t listed – but she didn’t know how to live in a house when I adopted her. We were really focusing a lottt on basic commands and playing with toys and not biting for the first week. Now I feel so behind and don’t even know what I should teach her…
On my list are:
– leash training
– better recall, better drop/leave it
– working on relaxation protocol, we got stuck on task set 8. I have family visiting this week so our progress will probably slow with all of the distractions.
– outside button/bell (she’s iffy on knowing how to ask to go outside. I typically bring her out before she needs to ask just as a break from excitement if she’s getting rowdy)
– taking food/toys away from her *I could use some resources on how to properly go about this*
– nail clipping/teeth brushing/bathing training
I have an in-home trainer visit and puppy classes starting soon. So any basics that I missed myself should be covered soon! What else should I focus on?!
