Hi! A very overwhelmed dog mum here My 9 month Samoyed puppy is the light of my life. He’s an angel and I’ve wanted him for so long. I’ve wished for him on all of my birthdays and Christmases
However for the last month or so, I’ve been having a really hard time with him. We’ve had a trainer since day 1 and he’s been in puppy class and now junior class as well. However he barks at all the dogs in class so we’ve to stand a little farther away so not to stress him out. We practiced loose leash walking since he was a pup but now he’s regressed a lot! I used to enjoy walking and training him but now I’m SO MISERABLE!! because of the constant supervision and redirecting He’s not neutered, fully crate trained and toilet trained and settled well at home. But when we take him to a new place, he BARKS at air for the first 15 min and barks at any dog that comes near him. He also pulls like a freight train (I understand he’s a pulling breed hence we worked on loose leash walking since he was 9-10 weeks old)
I feel like I just got out of puppy blues and now I’m blue again haha!I was super mindful in the socialisation window that he doesn’t meet every single person or dog so that he develops neutrality and he still pulls to them and barks at dogs that are near him and fixates on ones that are on the other side of the street.
His recall is good but is not allowed off lead because if he was and he saw a dog, he would run up to them and I don’t want to stress out other dogs and their handlers
I’m demotivated with training because I feel like all my work has gone down the drain because I was so careful and yet he behaves the way he does. I feel super embarrassed and judged because people might feel like “Why does she have a big dig if she can’t manage him” “why do people have dogs if they can’t train him”? etc.
Did I make a huge mistake by getting a dog? Am I bad dog owner? Would he be better in another home? I’m looking for any advice or guidance you may have. Thank you
