What worked for you with crate training and puppy hollering?
My new puppy has been with me for two weeks only, I know things are new. She was a rescue then her foster family held her 247 for about two months. Now she HATES being away from me. She will yell so much while I’m gone there are spit marks on the floor. She’ll poop in her crate and has no problem jumping around in it. Today I walked her, and took her outside twice and she still pooped her crate when I left. Poor thing got thrown into her first bath ever in a hurry and she was shaking like a leaf 😭
What I’ve tried: * play pen, metal crate, and soft bag crate * soft beds and blankets * a heartbeat mama (she just peed on it) * covering the crate * leaving the crate uncovered * lick mats * favorite bones * firm voice with no, settle * at least a few minutes a day alone * time in there while I’m gone or busy * training to settle in there
Things she’s Successfully Learned: * she happily goes in her crate for meals * she goes in on command for treats happily * she sits mostly quietly in her crate while I eat * she stays quiet in there while I walk around her * she has learned to stop banging crate walls * she sits quietly as I approach * she sleeps in her soft crate by my bed * she sleeps in her soft crate by my feet at work * if timed right, she doesn’t mess while I’m gone
But as soon as I leave, even to go shower she whines, moans and often screams. She’ll jump on the crate walls as well. I’m pretty sure she screams the whole time I’m gone on errands. I don’t think she hates the crate, I don’t think she’s afraid to be alone, I think she’s more angry about it. When I come home she isn’t a scared wreck like other fosters I’ve had with true separation anxiety. Heck sometimes if I leave her out she whines on the bathroom rug while I shower. She settles quickly in my arms, so she is able to calm herself and relax, but only if I’m touching or very close by.
Anyone deal with this? What helped?
