I have a yorkie mix 2years old that I’ve had since he was a puppy. I have always crated him growing up but recently he has started to howl when I leave the house. From what I’ve been reading to treat the separation anxiety, you need to start by leaving them in small doses and ensure you return before panic breaks out so they understand that we will always come back.
I don’t have an issue doing that on my days off. My problem is I need to go to work and that requires him being home for 8 hours or more depending on traffic or if I need to run to the grocery store etc. Also on my off days if I need to run errands, it’s going to take some time… I’m in the process of finding a dog trainer in the area but does anyone have a realistic routine I can work on in the meantime?
Additional info: He is left in his crate with a frozen kong or long lasting treat and two toys. I have a dog walker stop by mid day to take him out for thirty minutes. A few months ago I was trailing him out of the crate (free roam) but then he started chewing on my books (i think out of boredom) so now he is crated all day. I do not want him to build bad habits. He always whined a little when I would leave (I have a doggy cam). However now it is LOUD howling that I can hear from the parking lot. He is never destructive in his crate. He does not tear up his toys or his bed. I think he is just sad I am leaving 🙁
Would love and appreciate any advice and help!
