Hey everyone,
I’m looking for advice or experiences from anyone who may have seen something similar in their senior dogs.
I have a 13-year-old male Stafford who has recently developed a strange behavior. When he’s resting on the bed, usually in the late afternoon or evening, he will suddenly start very intensely licking his groin area — around the genitals, inner thighs, and also around the anal opening. The intensity increases to the point where his tail starts wagging and he makes squeaking/whining sounds, almost like he’s crying.
The weird part is that this mostly happens when I’m in another room and I only notice it because I hear him. As soon as he sees me, he stops. This has been happening roughly every other day.
He is generally showing normal signs of aging and his hearing is reduced. His urine looks normal, he urinates with the same frequency as always, and his bowel movements are normal. There are no obvious signs of issues with his anal glands or bladder.
One more detail that might be relevant: it’s currently winter where we live and the streets are heavily salted due to low temperatures. When we go for walks, the salt definitely comes into contact with the lower part of his body (belly, inner thighs, groin). I’m wondering if irritation from that could be contributing to the behavior.
I’m trying to figure out what could be causing this — discomfort? irritation? pleasure? neurological? anxiety? Has anyone had a similar experience with an older dog?
Any input would be appreciated!
