As a first time puppy mom of just a few weeks, I want to thank everyone who has posted about enforcing regular naps. I am only on my second day of putting my 14 week old puppy down for naps and the transformation of her behavior was immediate.
It never occurred to me that, just like human babies, puppies need to nap frequently. Of course, right?!!! I decided to adopt the one hour up (to potty, play and eat) then two hours to nap. It’s not an exact schedule so far but we’re still working out the kinks.
For instance sometimes she’s up a little over an hour but as soon as I notice that she’s getting overstimulated and biting me while playing, she’s off for a nap. She seems happier too. She really feels better after having her naps. Sometimes she rebels a little but it doesn’t take very long until she settles down and sleeps, making me realize how much she really needed to sleep.
As a tip I want to share that we have a small write-on wipe-off board in the kitchen that we have been using to keep track of when we take her outside and was she accomplished each time (number one and/or number two) so we know when she needs to be taken out again. It’s been helpful with house training her to get her outside regularly. So I am using the board to track her naps too.
I finally feel some relief having periods of time when she’s asleep and I am not having to monitor her every second to make sure she isn’t getting into something or having an accident on the carpet. I was losing my mind. I’m so grateful for reading the posts on naps and how important they are. I am thrilled to have found this sub and look forward to learning more about puppy parenting from you all! 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
