Purpose of a playpen vs a crate?

I'm getting ready to bring my puppy home and getting confused about the purpose of a play pen vs crate.

How do I make him like the crate? Should I put the crate ib the playpen? Where does he eat? I keep seeing to feed in the crate but won't that make him associate crate with food, not sleep?

Any tips help, thanks!!!
