My 4.5 month old great pyrenees mix puppy got suddenly terrified tonight, and I have zero idea why. She was fine all day, got two longs walks, training, played a bunch, and was lazing around and fell asleep in the bedroom by herself. When she woke up, she was really freaked out. Ears back, whale eyes, etc. We are remote and there were no environmental triggers I can think of, she was literally by herself and the house was very quiet.
It progressively got worse, to where she hid in her kennel, then tried to dash out of the house when my husband came back inside with her tail tucked and run off who knows where. He caught her, luckily (she's normally great about not running out when the door is open), but after that she was trembling and looking at us like she had no idea who we were. He took her out in case she needed to poo (she likes to dash around before she does sometimes) but she just beelined away from the house into the wilderness, and didn't want to come back.
We got her settled back in her crate and eventually both sat with her, and she calmed down to where she wasn't actively trembling and was laying on us for comfort, but it took another like two hours until she finally calmed enough to relax and sleep, but she still wouldn't take any treats or come out of the kennel.
Is this a normal fear period thing? Our other dog has literally never been scared of anything in his life (he tries to fight thunder) so this is entirely new to me. She has gotten freaked out by things before, but this was on another level. Should we take her to a vet? It's just so weird, there was literally nothing happening. Can dogs have nightmares and wake up terrified?
