We brought home our now 10 week doberman puppy last Wednesday. Things have been going pretty well but we are running into an issue with overnight crating. When we put her to bed she normally settles right away as she is very tired and ready for bed. She wakes me up to go outside once between 2-5 a.m.
When I put her back in the crate she whines and howls and barks for 20-30 seconds followed by 30 seconds to 2 minutes of quiet, then repeat. She will do this for 20 minutes to 40 minutes before finally settling down. If I give her a lick mat or topple she settles much quicker with minimal to no crying but I'm not sure if giving her one is teaching her to wake me up for a treat?
When I take her potty I am silent except for the "good girl" when she goes. I do have to put her coat on since it's under 32 here at the moment so there's a bit of wrestling to get that on and off. Once I put her back in the crate I am silent. Occasionally my husband and I will talk to one another but not to her.
This is my first puppy in over a decade and I'm open to suggestions!!
