I have a 15 week old frenchie and he is a poop licker.
He‘s doing pretty well as far as potty training goes (goes out every 4 hours and rings a bell to go out if he has the urge before then). He’s pretty chill on walks and kicks about in the back yard with my older Frenchie. He’s good in the crate and can go the full night 11:30-6:30 with no problem but every once in a while, he’ll poop in the crate overnight and just lick it? It’s not often (had him a month and he’s only Pooped in the crate maybe 3 times? For context, we brought him home and took him out every hour in the day and every 3 hours over night. Week two 2hrs in the day 4 hours over night. Week 3 3 hours in the day 5 hours over night and you get the point. We barely ever have accidents but the few times he has, he’s either eaten some of the poop OR last night licked it for funsies and then went back to sleep. I know some dogs just do that but I find it so disgusting and it makes my skin crawl when he wants to lick me or play with his toys with me because I just think “poopy mouth.” i brush his teeth every day but i just can’t deal. Curious how I can get him to stop.
he never does it outside because I walk him and pick it up immediately. He also doesn’t seem interested if he’s outside. He doesnt try. He licked up pee once which was also gross and random but he never really does that either, so I can’t imagine it’s a medical issue. He knows drop it and leave it so if I’m around he won’t bother because I watch him like a hawk and I’m super quick with the “no. leave it.” He’ll immediately walk away and go grab a toy (i spend ALOT of time on redirection so I think he just immediately grabs whatever toy is nearby if he hears no 😂) I have no issues as long as I’m present but at night, I’m asleep So I‘m not there to say leave it. I don’t think He has accidents often enough to warrant shrinking his go out durations (though I normally go to bed at 11:30 and wake up at 6:30 so this will be schedule for a while) because like I said he sleeps through the night most nights. I put the bell in one night and he rang it repeatedly to get me to come and play so I got rid of that. But based on that I think he’s maybe bored? I started leaving a teddy in the crate at night for him to play with if he wakes up to help with the boredom, but he rarely wakes up So it’s just for snuggles. And then of course, yesterday he pooped and then licked the poop instead of playing with the toy.
I genuinely wouldnt even care about the poop in the crate because it’s not like it’s every day BUT the eating/licking is where I draw the line. I have a camera on him so I can check on him through the night or if he wakes up and I’ve considered shutting it off so I won’t know but now that I have seen him and know he does it, if there’s ever poop in the crate in the future I feel like I’ll just assume he was chowing down and not want to touch him.
Idk if I need advice or reassurance that maybe it’ll stop but if you have either please help because I love the little guy – I just hate that I find him disgusting 😂 PS. I have a 7 year old Frenchie who is equally awesome and DOES NOT eat poop. So I feel even worse that I let one lick me and when the baby tries my first reaction is literally ”brother ewwww” 🥲
NOTE: we still play (I’ll run around with him outside, throw his ball etc, and he gets lots and lots of pets, I just don’t let his face get close to me because of the poops – which is sucks because I want to but also I can’t bring myself to be okay with it.)
