Meeting Shelter Dogs

I am going to a humane society on Thursday to meet a specific dog. I know a little bit about the dog. They've described him as being the type to take a little time to come out of his shell, which I think is mostly normal for shelter dogs. They really emphasized to me that he is extremely slow to warm up to men and needs to be in a female only home. As I am female and live in a female only home, that's no issue, but I do have men in my life and would really want the dog to be around them.

I suppose the purpose of this post is to see if anyone has any suggestions on properly introducing myself without scaring the dog, but also how to intro the dog to men, as there are some men that will be in my home or in my life that I would want the dog to feel comfortable with.

As an aside, any questions that I should be sure to ask about the dog while at the shelter. I have had several dogs over the course of my life, but never had any dogs that were as skittish as this one seems to be or dogs that specifically hated one gender. I want to make sure I am the right fit/environment for the dog. I would hate to have the dog and know that I am hindering his progress or keeping him from living his best and happiest life.

All tips/comments/suggestions welcomed.

Thank you!
